About Us Scientists in the Ecological Process and Function (EPF) Program’s five teams work from central Alaska to southern Oregon, from the coast to the interior. We improve understanding of the influences of biophysical environment and natural and human-caused disturbances on fundamental ecological processes and functions. We also identify, assess, and determine the causes of changes in ecosystem attributes, processes, and functions over time. Research Areas Our work addresses four key research questions: • How does the biophysical environment influence the function and properties of ecosystems, ecological communities, species, populations, and organisms? • What are the potential influences of climate change on ecosystem attributes, patterns, ecological processes, and their interactions? • How do disturbances influence ecological patterns and processes, and how do disturbances and ecological processes interact to determine the overall function, attributes, and dynamics of ecosystems? • What are the determinants of ecological status and trends of biota and ecosystems? Phone: (503) 808-2542 E-mail: jbarbour@fs.fed.us Mission Develop and communicate science products that synthesize and integrate existing research knowledge across disciplinary areas and spatial or temporal scales, to proactively inform policy and decisionmaking processes. About Us The Focused Science Delivery (FSD) Program searches for effective ways to make scientific information useful to an increasingly information-weary, media-savvy society. We achieve this by developing and assessing innovative approaches to shaping and sharing information, focusing on long-term collaboration, and continually seeking and addressing critical information gaps. We view practitioner involvement to be essential to facilitating the use of science in land management decisions, and pursue client-driven science delivery processes—from problem framing to synthesis of findings, from tool development to adoption. Research Areas Our work addresses three key issues: • Improve understanding of the role of environmental assessment requirements under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) in Forest Service management. • Develop landscape models to provide information to support policy decisions regarding the potential impacts of land development on important natural resources. • Conduct analyses of fire hazard reduction programs and deliver findings on the potential for using biomass from these activities to sustainably produce electricity and jobs. We examine how the public perceives and values ecological functions, goods, and services and how these factors influence people’s use and management of landscapes. About Us Our researchers work from Alaska, Washington, and Oregon with the ultimate goal of improving understanding about the effectiveness, efficiency, and fairness of government policies, management, decisionmaking processes, and programs. We work toward this goal by helping policymakers, managers, and the public understand the variety of available options in the ways we interact with and manage natural resources. Research Areas Our work addresses five key issues: • Improve knowledge of fundamental social and economic processes and their interactions with the natural environment. • Examine the roles of policies, programs, and other institutions in interactions between people and natural resources. • Describe and analyze the implications of changing demographics, socioeconomics, and technology on natural resources and their management. • Describe the capacity of dynamic landscapes to provide for evolving human wants and needs. • Conduct and use integrated multidisciplinary research to support development of management approaches that account for interactions among socioeconomic, ecological, and physical factors. About Us The Western Wildland Environmental Threat Assessment Center (WWETAC) is in Prineville, Oregon, colocated with the Ochoco National Forest headquarters. A unit of the Pacific Northwest Research Station, WWETAC was created to predict, detect, and assess existing and potential environmental threats to western wildlands. This includes forest threats such as invasive plants, the appearance of invasive insect threats, potential insect outbreaks, and the appearance of new pathogens. The Objectives of WWETAC • Evaluate the effects and consequences of multiple, interacting stresses on western wildland health. • Increase knowledge of the risks, uncertainties, and benefits of multiple environmental stresses on western ecological conditions and socioeconomic values. • Provide science-based decision-support tools for policy formulation and land management in the Western United States. • Provide land managers with credible predictions of potential severe disturbances in the West with sufficient warning for managers to take preventive actions.
