The TB5000 Gas Turbine Uprate to 5200/5400 bhp

The TB5000 Gas Turbine
Uprate to 5200/5400 bhp
For TB5000 Gas Turbines (and some later TB4000 models)
Answers for Energy
The TB type gas turbine, renowned for its ruggedness and reliability, numbering
in excess of 840 units operating throughout the world, was originally brought
into service in 1970.
Throughout the production life of the
TB turbine, the design and
performance of the engine has been
improved, whilst maintaining its
philosophy of reliability and ease of
maintenance on site.
Since the first TB3000, rated at 3100
bhp*, the TB has undergone three power
enhancement changes;
3990 bhp* - TB4000
4900 bhp* - TB5000
5200/5400 bhp* - TB5000 uprate
For the latter increase of power 4900
bhp* to 5200/5400 bhp*, we can offer
to uprate your TB5000 gas turbine. This
uprate to 5200/5400 bhp* can also be
offered for some later TB4000 models.
The Uprate
To increase the nominal ISO power
output of a TB5000 from 4900 bhp to
5200/5400 bhp, the design maximum
temperature was raised from 877°C to
900°C, giving an increased exhaust
temperature of 495°C.
To cater for this increase in temperature,
various design changes were made to the
turbine gas generator.
The combustion system is modified using
sealed chambers, the swirler tubes and
their extensions having special mating
features to improve temperature spread
to the compressor turbine.

Reliability
Whilst the TB5000 can be
uprated to provide up to 5400
bhp output, the following
points should be noted:
The increase in power attained by
uprating from 4900 bhp is 5200 bhp
for liquid fuel engines, and 5400 bhp
for gas fuel engines, subject to gas
fuel analysis.
Limitations of the driven unit
Dual fuel engines are rated respective
to the fuel used.

Ambient Temperature
Early TB5000 gas turbines were fitted
with a dry solids compressor cleaning
system.
Due to the nature of the cooled blades
required for the uprate, the cooling
holes would become blocked with solids,
defeating the cooling system. It is
therefore essential that a fluid wash
system is retrofitted.
