Summary Bio In its efforts to promote sustainable living among local residents and businesses, the Townsville City Council has adopted a framework that involves identifying achievable sustainability behaviours, engaging the community in collective social learning events, and using persuasive communication to foster behaviour change. In this seminar, Professor Sam Ham will discuss his work with the Townsville City Council in training several hundred government and private business owners in the theory and practice of persuasive communication, as well as in the research procedures required for strategic communication decision making. The training aims to develop within the community the skills necessary to design and implement effective communication strategies to tackle over 240 behaviours related to sustainable living in Townsville. Professor Sam Ham is Director of the Centre for International Training and Outreach and Professor of communication psychology and international conservation in the University of Idaho’s Department of Conservation Social Sciences. Sam’s scholarly work has focused on the role of strategic communication in sustainable development, particularly in the contexts of energy and water consumption and naturebased tourism. A recipient of numerous national and international awards for teaching and training, Sam’s work in applied communication has reached more than 42,000 people across the United States and in 41 other countries.
