Summary
Bio
In its efforts to promote sustainable living
among local residents and businesses, the
Townsville City Council has adopted a
framework that involves identifying
achievable sustainability behaviours,
engaging the community in collective social
learning events, and using persuasive
communication to foster behaviour change.
In this seminar, Professor Sam Ham will
discuss his work with the Townsville City
Council in training several hundred
government and private business owners in
the theory and practice of persuasive
communication, as well as in the research
procedures required for strategic
communication decision making. The
training aims to develop within the
community the skills necessary to design
and implement effective communication
strategies to tackle over 240 behaviours
related to sustainable living in Townsville.
Professor Sam Ham is Director of the
Centre for International Training and
Outreach and Professor of communication
psychology and international conservation
in the University of Idaho’s Department of
Conservation Social Sciences. Sam’s
scholarly work has focused on the role of
strategic communication in sustainable
development, particularly in the contexts of
energy and water consumption and naturebased tourism. A recipient of numerous
national and international awards for
teaching and training, Sam’s work in
applied communication has reached more
than 42,000 people across the United
States and in 41 other countries.
