Ecole King George Public School Inspiring Excellence in Life-long Learning 72 Lemon Street, Guelph, Ontario, N1E 2H5 Telephone ● 822-1911 Fax ● 837-0034 Randy Dewey, Principal June 8, 2015 Dear Parents and Guardians: The third and final report of the New East Guelph (Couling Crescent) School Boundary Review has been posted on the board website at www.ugdsb.on.ca/egbr, in advance of the presentation to trustees on Tuesday, June 9. The only students who are impacted by the review’s recommendations are current and future JK to Grade 2 students at École King George PS who live in the proposed final attendance area (see the attached Map 2). Current Grade 3 and higher students will be grand-parented at King George. The new school building project is currently moving through the site plan approval process with the City of Guelph. A number of variables may affect the progress of planning and construction, and so it is not known at this time whether the school will open in September 2016 or September 2017. If the recommendations in Report #3 are approved by trustees, the new school will open as either JK-4 FI in September 2016, or JK-5 FI in September 2017, and continue to grow each year until it is JK-8. Due to surging enrolment at École Edward Johnson PS, projected to breach on-theground and portable capacity by September 2015, the board established an interim attendance area for Couling Crescent prior to the start of the boundary review (see the attached Map 1). Current JK-2 Edward Johnson students living in the interim boundary, together with an incoming JK cohort, will make up the new JK-3 FI enrolment for the Couling Crescent school holding at Tytler PS as of September 2015. When the new Couling Crescent school does open in September of 2016 or 2017, the designated École King George PS students in the attendance area will join those students who have been holding at Tytler PS to create a new school community. The only exception to this simultaneously blending would be a circumstance where the Couling Crescent school became ready for occupancy part-way through the 2016-2017 school year. In such a case, it may be possible for students and staff holding at Tytler PS to move to the new facility early, but École King George PS students would finish their year at King George. -2Report #3 acknowledges that when Couling Crescent reaches JK-7 in September 2019 the enrolment for the first Grade 7 class may be only 30 students. This would be a low number for an intermediate program, and so a decision will need to be made by trustees in February 2019 based on the numbers available at that time – proceed as planned with 7/8 classes, or delay Couling Crescent’s intermediate program. The boundary review’s final report is 11 pages, plus the various maps and appendices. I have attempted to summarize key points in this letter, but I encourage parents to visit the web page and check out the full report to be fully informed. We also have a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document that addresses concerns and issues that have been raised by parents. Following the presentation to trustees at Tuesday’s meeting of the Business Operations Committee, Report #3 will go to the regular board meeting on June 23 for final approval. The June 23 board meeting will be the last opportunity to delegate to trustees – see the boundary review web page for details. Thank you for your interest in the boundary review process, and your input. Yours truly, Randy Dewey, Principal
