Shell Canada and Siemens Canada TR team up for major projects Major projects made the business relationship between Shell and Siemens grow significantly during the last year. Under the global »Shell-Siemens Main Power Distributor Contractor« umbrella agreement, Siemens has recently been selected to supply power transformers for the Carmon Creek project located in the oil sands develop ment in Alberta, Canada. The Canadian oil sands are the third-largest proven crude oil reserve in the world. They will play an important role in meeting future world energy demand. Carmon Creek represents a safe and secure source of energy for these demands. The project, representing a total order intake of approximately €10 million at this stage, involves three 75/100/125-MVA step-down transformers as well as three 138/184/230-MVA, 260/16.5-kV generator step-up transformers, all of them manufactured at Siemens Transformers Mexico, plus three 20-MVA 34.5/4.16-kV unit auxiliary transformers sourced from Siemens Colombia Transformers. Since the contract was awarded in June 2014, Siemens Canada has already started the implementation of the project. Delivery of the transformers is scheduled for 2015 and early 2016. Siemens Canada will supply power transformers for a cogeneration plant at Carmon Creek. The combined cycle power generation plant is designed to produce steam for oil extraction across well pads and electricity to be fed into Alberta’s electrical system. Siemens transformers are crucial for power distribution to the central processing facility and the well pads. Siemens also suggested improving the transformers’ design by using connection terminals suitable for cable connections to gas-insulated switchgear.
