SD Board of Regents meeting at BHSU

The South Dakota Board of Regents will be meeting on the BHSU campus Dec. 2‐3. Please help us welcome the Regents and
administration from the other state universities. The full board meetings will be Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 12:30 and
Thursday, Dec. 3 at 9 a.m. in the Jacket Legacy room in the Student Union. There will be campus community forum
Wednesday, Dec. 2 from 5‐5:30 p.m. in the Jacket Legacy Room.

Weather Closure Announcements
It’s that time of year when class cancellation and delays are possible due to weather and road conditions. Please check the
BHSU website (www.BHSU.edu/information) and your email for the most up‐to‐date weather closure information. Details
are also sent via the Emergency Alert system, on the BHSU social media (Facebook, Twitter) sites and on the weather
phone line at 642‐6059. The information is also sent to the media; however, it generally takes longer for the information
to appear on individual media sites. Closures for BHSU‐Rapid City are implemented separately due to different road and
weather conditions at each of the locations. BHSU‐RC closures are announced on their webpage at
www.BHSU.edu/RapidCity (on the lower right hand side) and on the BHSU‐RC weather line 605.718.4118.

Campus Energy Tour
The Campus Energy Tour has been rescheduled for Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at 3pm. Meet at Student Union Lobby.
Join the Sustainability Committee for a tour of the Student Union and Facilities Plant to see first‐hand how we heat and
cool our campus. Get a behind the scenes look at our underground tunnels. Ask questions and learn how we are working
toward improving efficiency on campus.

Last year, BHSU student Bryce Boser’s winning “Where Anything Is Possible” advertisement reached nearly 47,000 people
during the Super Bowl. This year’s game is expected to have an even larger viewership! Get your piece of the action by

Children's Hospital Christmas Donations

TRIO Student Org. and Kaitlyn Schumacher are collecting donations of crayons, colored pencils, coloring books etc. for the
Children's Hospital in Omaha. You can drop off your donations in Student Support Services in the first floor in Woodburn
Hall. The deadline for donating is December 10!

Food War with South Dakota Mines
Dec. 3
The Student‐Athlete Advisory Committee's from Black Hills State University and South Dakota School of Mines have
announced a Food War that will take place between each school's home games against each other. The Yellow Jacket SAAC
is asking for help in collecting non‐perishable food items and canned goods to help beat tech. Black Hills State hosts South
Dakota Mines in basketball on Thursday, December 3, with a doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m. The overall winner will
be the school that collects the most canned goods and non‐perishable food items by weight.

Honorary doctorate will present at BHSU
Dec. 11 | 1:30pm | Meier Recital Hall
Jerome Greene, noted historian and author, will receive an honorary degree from BHSU during this fall’s commencement.
Mr. Greene will be doing a presentation on Friday, Dec 11 at 1:30 p.m. in Meier Recital Hall. His presentation is titled ‐
“Lakota Memories of Wounded Knee, 1890: Perspectives of a People."
Mr. Greene is a retired historian, curator, and manager with the National Park Service and the author of 17 books, four of
which deal with South Dakota history, besides numerous articles, reviews, and government history reports, including
National Historic Register and National Historic Landmark nominations. A native of northern New York State, he is a U.S.
Army veteran, a graduate of Black Hills State University (1968) and the University of South Dakota (1969), and has
completed postgraduate work at the University of Oklahoma. You are invited to attend his presentation.

TRIO Student Org. Coloring Contest

TRIO Student Org. has their 9th annual coloring contest going right now and we would like to invite BHSU students and
children of faculty, and staff to submit an entry. First, Second and Third place prizes will be awarded in each age group.
The age groups are 0‐3, 4‐6, 7‐9, 10‐12, 13‐18 and BHSU students! Please turn in your entry to Student Support Services in
Woodburn Room 136 or mail it to Unit 9510. Ages 0‐18 include name, age category, phone number and parent’s name.
BHSU students include name and phone number on BACK of entry.

Silent Art Auction
BHSU Silent Art Auction Fundraiser will be held November 23rd – December 8th (Ending at Noon on the 8th). All proceeds
will benefit the Black Hills State University Art Program scholarships.

Advanced Studio Lighting Photography Reception
Dec. 8 | 4‐6 pm | Jonas Academic Upper Photographers Gallery
The BHSU Advanced Studio Lighting class will be hosting their annual exhibit in the Upper Photographers Gallery. The work
demonstrates a year‐long commitment, by students, to master creative lighting techniques within the photographic
medium.
Also opening Dec. 8 from 4‐6 p.m. in the Upper Photographers Gallery in Jonas Hall is Secrets of Childhood, by Joe Geyer
and the Annual Contemporary Issues Exhibition, Bare Originality, in the Lower Photographers Gallery. Both exhibits will be
on display through February. The exhibition is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday‐Friday. Work by the
following photographers will be included in the exhibition: Joni Burgess, Chase Dahl, Victoria Dodge, Dotti Dodson, Abbi
Klyaic, Kasha Nankivel, Taylor Stone, Miranda Swick, Kailey Tennessen, James Alexzander Vande Hey, and Riley Winter.

BHSU honors student will defend her capstone about improving education
Education and plans about what to learn can be tough for any student of any level. Black Hills State University Honors
Program students came up with the idea of how to learn faster and easier.
Megan Hohn, elementary education and early childhood special education major from Parkston, will present her Honors
capstone defense “So Much More Than Just A Game: A Complete Summer Program Curriculum For School‐Age Children
Aligned to Education Standards.” Hohn will present during the final Geek Speak lecture of the fall semester, Thursday,
Dec. 3 at 4 p.m. in room 110 of Jonas Hall on the BHSU campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.
More than 200 students will graduate at BHSU fall commencement ceremony
More than 200 candidates for graduation will be recognized during the 170th Black Hills State University commencement
ceremony.
The fall commencement ceremony is at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center on the
BHSU campus.
