Geek Speak is Back!
Jan. 14 | 4:00pm | Jonas 110
Join us for our first Geek Speak of spring! These weekly lectures are free and open to the public. On January 14 at 4:00 p.m. in Jonas
110, Professor Ann Porter will present, "Stuffies, Sex and the Contemporary Counter‐Reformation."
This presentation will use visual images to investigate the idea of a contemporary Counter‐Reformation. Like the Counter‐
Reformation initiated by the Catholic church to guard against the perceived heresy of Protestantism, so the cultural conservatism of
the 1950’s, when challenged by the explorations of the 1960’s, created a conservative backlash that is still with us today. Examples of
this phenomenon will range from Lassie, Barbie and Willem de Kooning to Hello Kitty, Mike Kelly and Furry Conventions.
