What is National TRIO Day? #4

The TRIO Program at BHSU is funded by the U.S. Department of Education to serve 200 eligible students. Approximately half of the degree‐seeking students at BHSU meet the eligibility criteria for TRIO!

A student who has utilized SSS services for the past 4 years stated in a recent scholarship application that “(The SSS staff) have gotten to know me, the good with the bad. (They) have been a support in my personal life and cheerleaders that have kept me going.

The staff have never judged me or looked down on me for my background. They have always made me feel that I could overcome my struggles and succeed. Through my stumbles in life and hardships they have helped me through by listening and making suggestions. I have had a personal connection with each person . . . SSS helps with the little things people take for granted . . .”

What is National TRIO Day #3

The TRIO Program is available to assist students who are first‐generation in college, OR income‐eligible students (based on taxable income guidelines for their family size), OR students with a disability that could affect their academic success.

Jessica, a 2nd‐year student, talks about her involvement with TRIO. “The most amazing part about being in TRIO was when I got the

Student of the Month award. (SSS) said I received the award because I was responsible, showed initiative, asked questions, and put energy into my learning. It really gave me the affirmation I needed to know that I was doing good in school, that I was surviving, and that it was going to be possible for me to earn my degree.”

Geek Speak in the Library!

This week's Geek Speak featuring Dr. Martin Fashbaugh will be held in the E. Y. Berry Library and Learning Center. Join us at 4:00 on

Thursday for “Preaching to the Nerves Instead of the Judgment”: The Victorian Sensation Novel.

As a real or perceived threat to class divisions, social mores, and rigid gender roles, the English literary establishment saw the

Victorian Sensation Novel of the 1860s (by authors such as Ouida, Charles Reade, Ellen Price, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, and Wilkie

Collins) as an ideological threat. This lecture will go over this genre’s characteristics, the historical conditions contributing to its popularity, its influence on so‐called “serious” Victorian fiction, and its lasting influence on Western culture. For example, with its romantic triangles, adulterous relationships, melodramatic circumstances, snobbish upper‐class characters, and attractive villains, the Sensation Novel produced the archetypes for the present‐day television soap opera.

3/30/2016 February 18 Campus eUpdate  Krueger, Amanda

My presentation intends to challenge students’ perceptions of Victorian literature and culture as stuffy and highly moralistic while also helping them to appreciate the Sensation Novel’s enormous impact on contemporary pop culture.

American Film Noir Series

BHSU continues The Big Read celebration of Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon by hosting their American film noir series, Feb. 4,

11, and 25, Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. each evening. The film series is free and open to the public. They will be held at BHSU in the Jonas

305.

The films are classics from the 1940s and 50s film noir movement. The movies scheduled are:

Feb. 25, “The Stranger” (1946)

The Big Read in Spearfish is presented in partnership with The Matthews, Grace Balloch Memorial Library, Black Hills State University,

& 50s has had a huge influence on modern art, even beyond filmmaking. We are excited to share this piece of history with the people of our community and we are grateful to Black Hills State for helping make this event possible. The Big Read in Spearfish is really a

“big” collaboration and we are pleased to be working with so many outstanding groups.” says Ava Sauter, Community Outreach

Manager for The Matthews Opera House and Arts Center. A program of the National Endowment for the Arts, The Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. Managed by Arts Midwest, this initiative offers grants to support innovative community reading programs designed around a single book.

Spearfish is one of 75 communities nationwide participating in The Big Read from September 2015‐June 2016. From Jan. 2016‐Mar.

2016, our community will celebrate Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon with a full calendar of events. View a full calendar of events for The Big Read in Spearfish.
