MBB: Yellow Jackets Fall to
SD Mines, 55‐53
Kelly, a recent BHSU & SSS graduate shares her thoughts about SSS. “They have been a lifeline for me . . . SSS is an anchor to a
positive and solid way of conquering every obstacle . . . because of their help I am following a dream to . . . work with kids that don’t
always get the best of their academic experience. I would never have been able to work with the Special Olympic athletes or been
able to go to NCUR for my research project this last year if it would not have been for their encouragement. It was a remarkable
experience that I will never forget. Their encouragement has brought me to a place I never thought I could get to.”

Geek Speak!
Feb. 25 | 4pm | Jonas 110
Join us on Thursday for Dr. Amy Fuqua's Geek Speak, "Biblically Speaking: Sin and the Role of Women in the Christian New Testament."
A pregnant, young girl, sane but prone to visions, willing to travel by donkey in her 9th month, and to entertain guests both
flamboyant and humble: this is the ideal woman as presented in founding Christian texts. Impossibly, she is both innocent and
maternal. Some New Testament women succeed as minor versions of her. Lazarus’s sisters, for example, prove their devotion. So
does the mother of John the Baptist, Elizabeth. Perhaps the only New Testament woman as interesting as Mary is Mary Magdalene,
who, despite having once suffered from demons, and despite her later reputation as a recovering prostitute, achieves the honor of
being the first to see Jesus after his resurrection. Christian texts leave little middle ground between virgin and whore. Art and
literature in the western tradition make that ground even smaller.

Kayleigh is in her 2nd year with SSS and states, “When I go to my advisor through the SSS program, I feel important. I don’t feel like I
am wasting someone’s time and energy when I step in the office, and that is a good feeling. When I have a problem about anything
from my schedule, to classes to financial aid, SSS can always direct me to the right people, and that is also a very helpful thing this
program has to offer for students like me who don’t know where to go or who to go to in certain situations.”

Film Noir Series
Feb. 25 | 6:30pm | Jonas 305
BHSU continues The Big Read celebration of Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon by hosting their American film noir series. The
film series is free and open to the public.
Join us for a classic from the 1940s film noir movement, “The Stranger” (1946).
The Big Read in Spearfish is presented in partnership with The Matthews, Grace Balloch Memorial Library, BHSU, Spearfish Zonta
Club, South Dakota Arts Council, and Spearfish Foundation of Public Education.
“The film noir movement of the 1940s and 50s has had a huge influence on modern art, even beyond filmmaking. We are excited to
share this piece of history with the people of our community and we are grateful to Black Hills State for helping make this event
possible. The Big Read in Spearfish is really a “big” collaboration and we are pleased to be working with with so many outstanding
groups.” says Ava Sauter, Community Outreach Manager for The Matthews Opera House and Arts Center.
A program of the National Endowment for the Arts, The Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and
ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. Managed by Arts Midwest, this initiative offers grants to support innovative
community reading programs designed around a single book. Spearfish is one of 75 communities nationwide participating in The Big
Read from September 2015‐June 2016. From Jan. 2016‐Mar. 2016, our community will celebrate Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese
Falcon with a full calendar of events.
