One Book South Dakota Book Discussion

The library will be hosting a One Book South Dakota discussion on Thursday, October 8th at 6:00 pm
in the lounge area of the library. This year’s book is “Ordinary Grace” by William Kent Krueger. If

you would like to join in the discussion, you can borrow a copy of the book. The books are in my
office – Library 109. Since 2003, the One Book South Dakota program has encouraged everyone
across South Dakota to read and discuss the same novel or memoir throughout the course of a year.
Community and book groups’ receive books on loan and can invite a scholar from the SDHC list to
facilitate their discussion. Our discussion will be led by Joanna Jones.

Fun Run in Honor of BHSU Student Gage McSpadden
September 12 | Spearfish City Park
You're invited to join the BHSU community Saturday, Sept. 12 as we remember BHSU student Gage
McSpadden during the McSpadden Fun Run 3K/5K. Gage, a psychology major and distance runner on
the BHSU cross country and track & field teams, passed away this summer. The McSpadden Fun Run
begins at the Spearfish City Park parking lot across from the pavilion. Watch for more details on
this event in the next Campus e‐Update.

Leadership Retreat‐ Free for students
September 18th and 19th | Storm Mountain retreat site
Sign up now for the annual Leading Edge: Leadership Retreat taking place September 18th and 19th
at Storm Mountain retreat site. The leadership retreat is 100% free, transportation, meals, lodging
and materials are all included. This is only open to the first 50 students who sign up. To register for

BHSU NEWS RELEASES BHSU to host Canon Explorer of Light lecture
Black Hills State University will host internationally known photographer and Canon Explorer of
Light Jennifer Wu for a special lecture Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m., Clare and Josef Meier
Recital Hall on the BHSU campus.
Student veteran donates American flag flown over U.S. Capitol to BHSU‐RC
An American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol honoring veterans in the state of South Dakota will
find a new home at Black Hills State University‐Rapid City, thanks to the Student Veteran’s Club at
BHSU‐RC.
Physical education program at BHSU receives national recognition
The Black Hills State University physical education program was recently awarded continuing
national recognition by the National Association of Sport and Physical Education by the Council for
Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). The recognition affirms that BHSU students are
receiving a state‐of‐the‐art, cutting edge education.
