Biology and Life Sciences Implementation Team Notes from first Services sub-group Meeting 05/11/2010 Present: Susan Avery, JoAnn Jacoby, John MacMullen, Diane Schmidt Guest: David Ward Our initial sub-group meeting was focused on identifying the information the team needs in order to make decisions, and identifying people in the Library and on campus whose input is important to consider. Our main questions were: What is the approximate size of the user communities involved, and who are the key contacts the team should talk with? Actions: Diane to obtain data from DMI on academic units. Group to ask Fred and Melissa for recommendations on key unit contacts. What are the current engagements of bio and life science librarians with instruction? Where are there opportunities for additional engagement? Actions: Group to document known ongoing engagements. Susan to email Herb Whiteley (VetMed) to make him aware of this team’s charge, since he is the leader of the Stewarding Excellence team on Biological Science Education & Research (bio instruction across campus). Group to examine information literacy compencies and information from the Reference NSM team (David Ward attended a portion of the meeting to provide background information). What service models at Illinois and peer institutions are potentially relevant to this situation? Actions: John to provide information on current models at peer institutions. JoAnn to obtain job advertisement for the Life Sciences Data Services Librarian position. Group to document current relevant models on campus (Scholarly Commons, Data Services, 'embedded' librarians [LIS, Biotech, Global Studies, Women & Gender Resources, etc.], subject specialists, new reference services team recommendations). Group to investigate outcomes of Health Information Services NSM team for relevant information. Group to examine academic unit proposals for the Burrill space in relation to potential service models and make recommendations to full team.
