College Heights English Grade 12, College Preparation ENG4C Ms. Angus Course Description: This course emphasizes consolidation of literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills. Students will analyze informational texts and literary works from various time periods, countries, and cultures; write research reports, summaries, and short analytical essays; complete an independent study project; and analyze the interactions among media forms, audiences, and media industry practices. An important focus will be on establishing appropriate style and using business and technical language effectively. (Unit 1) - “Tupac’s Resurrection” Video (Unit 1) - “Maus” Art Spiegelman (Graphic Novel) (Unit 2) - “Night” Elie Weisel - “Psycho” Alfred Hitchcock Film (Unit 3) - Language Power 9, 10 - Kim Marshall Assignments Analytical Essay (10%) -750 word essay analysing the lyrics from a song of their choice. A creative element will also need to be submitted, in which the student will design their own CD. This will include a cover, and full song lyrics. - Music Test (5%) Creative Writing (10%) - upon completion of “Maus”, students will complete a 5 page creative wrting assignment in which they will predict what they think will happen to the characters in the novel. They can choose between a 5 page short story, a 5 page journal, or a 5 page comic. Presentation (10%) students will work in groups of 2-3 preparing a presentation of a film of their choice. They will use their knowledge from the film unit to prepare a detailed 15-20 min. presentation of key cinematic elements within their film. Research Paper (10%) - 1000 word research paper on a topic of their choice. Final Culminating Assignment (15%) Independent Study Unit - Students will work independently throughout the semester reading a variety of texts on their chosen theme. Students will need 3 mediums, (1 novel, and 2 other mediums of their choice). Students will complete a 750 word analytical essay on their mediums in relation to their theme, as well a creating a creative representation of their theme. Examination (15%) - 2-3 hours in total length
