Course Description:
This course emphasizes consolidation of literacy, critical thinking, and communication
skills. Students will analyze informational texts and literary works from various time
periods, countries, and cultures; write research reports, summaries, and short analytical
essays; complete an independent study project; and analyze the interactions among media
forms, audiences, and media industry practices. An important focus will be on establishing
appropriate style and using business and technical language effectively.

Assignments
CD Project (10%)
-750 word essay analysing the lyrics from a song of their choice. A creative element will
also need to be submitted, in which the student will design their own CD. This will
include a cover, and full song lyrics.
Creative Writing (10%)
- upon completion of “Maus”, students will complete a 5 page creative wrting
assignment in which they will predict what they think will happen to the characters in the
novel. They can choose between a 5 page short story, a 5 page journal, or a 5 page
comic.
Presentation (10%)
students will work in groups of 2-3 preparing a presentation of a film of their choice.
They will use their knowledge from the film unit to prepare a detailed 15-20 min.
presentation of key cinematic elements within their film.
Final Culminating Assignment (15%)
Research Paper (10%)
- 750 word research paper on a topic of their choice.
Examination (15%)
- 2-3 hours in total length
