College Height District High School English Grade 9, Locally Developed ENG 1L Teacher(s): Mrs. Fickes Course Description This course emphasizes key reading, writing, oral communication, and thinking skills that students need for success in secondary school and their daily lives. In particular, the program works toward preparing students to enter the Grade Eleven course in English, Workplace and completing the Grade Ten Test of Reading and Writing successfully. Students will read a variety of narrative and expository forms, poetry and drama and practise the skills necessary for clear and accurate spoken and written language. In particular, course activities will help develop confidence, self esteem and provide motivation to succeed in high school and life. Units/Topics I Am Me Unit Short Story Unit Novel Study- The Juvie Three Group Novel Resources - Language Power D, Reading and Reasoning Beginning, Megawords 1, How to Spell, Spellography, Juvie Three. Teaching and Learning Strategies A wide variety of strategies will be used to meet the needs of the students: whole and small group instruction, collaborative work, learning logs, etc. There will be a strong emphasis on reading and writing strategies. Based on availability, Desktop Publisher and W ord Processing will be the focus for competency in Information Technology. Key Curriculum Learning Expectations By the end of this course, students will Reading - read many types of fiction and non-fiction from a variety of time periods; - show an understanding of types and styles in a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction. W riting - gather ideas for writing from a variety of print and electronic sources; - use a variety of forms of writing to express themselves, making their ideas clear and interesting; - revise, edit and proof-read written work, checking to make it accurate and clear. - . Language - speak, write and present, using language which is appropriate to the grade and effective for the purpose of the writing and its audience; - use listening techniques and oral communication skills to participate in classroom discussions and more formal activities. Media - show knowledge of the elements, intended audience, and production methods in many types of media forms; - apply this knowledge to create media works and describe what they are intended to do. www.curriculum.org Assessment and Evaluation Both term work and summative work will be based on the following weighting of the Achievement Level Categories: Knowledge/Understanding 17.5 % Thinking/Inquiry 17.5% Communication 17.5% Application 17.5% Term Work 70% of the final grade will be based on work throughout the term Final Summative Evaluation 15% of the final grade will be based on the final evaluation: Final Culminating Activity 15% -includes expectations from a minimum of three of the course’s curriculum strands -may be started one third into the term -is completed 2-3 weeks before the exam Examination Assessment Tools Learning Skills Examination 10% -1.5 hours in total length -includes reading and follow-up activity -includes writing from a prompt rubrics, checklists, anecdotal reports, etc. will be reported separately from academic achievement
