A two-year MS Assistantship (July, 2016 to May, 2018) is available at the Forest Sustainability Lab,
Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, University of Georgia.
The successful applicant will develop methods and collect data to quantify benefits related with Sustainable
Forestry Initiative (SFI)’s Fiber Sourcing Standards at the landscape level to ensure long term sustainability
of Georgia’s forestry resources. The student will also explore potential policy impediments to further
improve Best Management Practices (BMP) compliance rates in Georgia. Additionally, the student will
analyze Georgia Forestry Commission’s Silvicultural BMPs Implementation and Compliance Database to
determine trends of BMP compliance rates. The student will work closely with Langdale Center for Forest
Business, Southeastern Wood Producers Association, and Georgia SFI Implementation Committee for the
successful completion of the research. This MS Assistantship is funded by a research grant from the
Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Inc.
Stipend and Benefits: This assistantship is based on a 40% stipend (16 hour work week). Position will
offer approximately $18,981/year, full tuition waiver, and University supplement for health insurance.
Student will get a chance to present his/her work in regional and national conference(s). The student will
receive a full-tuition waiver; however, is expected to pay a matriculation fee of $25 and mandated student
and activity fees totaling approximately $1,129 per semester. All students on assistantship are required to
have health insurance, and a portion of the premium for the University System’s health insurance plan is
paid by the University of Georgia.

Qualifications: Applicants from various disciplinary backgrounds are encouraged but a keen interest in
forest policy issues is required. National and international applicants are encouraged to apply. The
minimum GRE score for an incoming MS student at the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources
is 1000. University of Georgia uses concordance table for converting new GRE scores to old ones.
The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources Graduate Program is one of the largest and most
respected forestry and natural resources programs in the United States with about 200 graduate students.
The Warnell School is located in Athens, Georgia also known as Classic City due to local music, food, and
recreational opportunities all year around.
