Principal ’ s Message

Welcome back, and Happy New Year! We hope that all our JD Hogarth families enjoyed a safe and fun-filled holiday. Thank you to the many families that attended our winter assemblies. It was nice to see so many students performing and sharing their talents. A special thank you to all our students and classes that performed, and to all who were involved in the preparation and support during the assembly. It is so important to take time to recognize the many JD talents, the courage it takes to perform and the leadership that was displayed by our students which contributed to a seamless flow at our assemblies. Well done JD Hawks!

Thank you all for giving so generously throughout the month of December. Whether it was in time, money, food or gifts, our community responded to many requests for assistance. We are proud to be part of a community so willing to support and acknowledge others. Once again, the food drive items collected filled Mrs. Spindl ey’s van more than once. Soon Mrs. Spindley will need to invest in a trailer to accommodate the delivery of all the generous donations made by the JD families.

Despite the unpredictable weather, many of our students continue to embrace our new play space be it by taking advantage of the tarmac games or accessing the field area to engage in a variety of games. We will continue to work towards providing our students with opportunities for active and cooperative play. We continue to teach students the proper way to play outside focusing on playing safely, including others, and being respectful in order to maintain safe and active break times.

We now find ourselves starting the first week of classes for 2016, and we are well into the latter part of term one. It is important to get back into routine and make sure homework is completed each night as it is assigned, and to follow the deadlines set by the teachers. As always, our focus is on providing the best education for your child. We have dedicated staff to provide excellent support and programming for our students.

All the best for 2016,

M. Barrow

School Bus Code of Conduct

Our school bus drivers are trained professionals who are committed to providing a safe environment for your child while they are traveling to and from school. Please share the following information with your child(ren) and encourage them to respect safety first when traveling on the bus. The Upper Grand District School Board endorses the following bus protocol:

• follow the direction of the bus driver

• be at your stop at least 5-10 min. before your pick up time

• stay seated when the bus is in motion

• no eating, drinking or using inappropriate language

• keep books, lunch bag and school bag on your lap

Periodic Head Lice Checks

Winter seems to be a bad time for head lice. If your child has an itchy scalp, please check his/her head for lice. These pests can be a real nuisance, but if caught early they are easier to manage. Check your child ’s head by looking close to his/her scalp, lifting his/her hair with toothpicks. Check behind the ears and in the crown area of their heads. If you find some lice or nits, please contact the school, treat and remove nits. Thanks for your continued support.

Student Safety

Thank you for diligently using the sign in and sign out procedures and wearing a visitor sticker when at JD Hogarth. Please also note that adult supervision begins at 8:40 a.m. each morning.

Children should not be dropped off prior to 8:40 a.m. unless previous arrangements have been made (ie. a sports practice).

Procedures:

1. All visitors and volunteers need to check into the office and obtain a visitor sticker.

2. When leaving the school, all visitors and volunteers must sign out at the office.

3. All parents picking their children up during the day need to report to the office to sign them out. Their children will be called down to meet them.

4. Any parents visiting the playground during the day need to check into the office and obtain a visitor sticker. They may also be asked to identify themselves to staff/supervisors on duty.

Indoor Shoes

Parents are asked to send indoor shoes or an extra pair of running shoes for their child. Not only is it unhealthy and dangerous for students to walk around the floors of the school in socks, we want students to be prepared in the event of an emergency where we have to exit the school building.

Book Fair Support

A big thank you goes out to all of our families who supported the Scholastic

Book Fair this year. It really was a monster of a sale. With your help we raised $1500, all of which goes entirely into new book purchases for our library!

Allergies

Just a reminder that we have children and staff in the school with extreme allergies. The allergy for these children is so severe that it could be life threatening. These students and staff are aware of their allergies and are beginning to know to avoid certain products.

Salad/Yogurt Bar Days UPDATE!

J.D. Hogar th’s famous Salad/Yogurt Bar Days will commence once again during the first week of January. As a part of our Food and Friends program here at our school, we continue to be dedicated in making sure students are provided with food that promotes a healthy lifestyle and provides optimal learning.

Due to the popularity, we have had to make changes to our schedule.

Please check the chart carefully to see when your child has salad/yogurt bar day. Some classes have changed days, while others remain the same. Remember to send a fork and a container with your child on their assigned day to enjoy the healthy and scrumptious food provided in the front foyer.

Improving Traffic Safety in Front of Our School

Our school site gets very congested with vehicles during the morning drop- off and afternoon pickup; this prevents our school buses from running on schedule and causes disruption to Belsyde Avenue and at the pedestrian crossing.

Upper Grand District School Board has been looking at ways to reduce traffic congestion as part of the School Travel Plan for J.D. Hogarth. The first step being taken is to impose ‘No Left Turns ’ for all vehicles exiting the school site during the peak times of 8:00 – 9:30 a.m and 3:00-4:00 p.m. This will help to keep vehicles moving through the front driveway and avoid traffic backing up and blocking the driveway and the public road. The ‘No

Left Turn ’ requirement will be in effect from January 18 th , 2016 when the new traffic signs will be unveiled at the site exit. Please help us to improve traffic safety in front of our school by following this new requirement.

If you drive your child to school, you can also help to improve traffic safety at our school by:

Driving slowly and giving pedestrians right of way at all times

Observing the traffic rules and only parking in designated parking spaces

Avoiding stopping or parking in the bus drop off zone

Parking instead in a nearby street and walking a block or two with your child

HOW TO SUPPORT INQUIRY AT HOME

Now-a-days "knowing stuff" is no longer enough.Any resourceful student with an iPad could sit in front of the TV and Google all the questions to Alex Trebek's responses on

Jeopardy, and get them correct. We are moving away from simply "knowing content," to being able to apply knowledge in interesting, creative, and critical ways.To accomplish this, students and teachers need to ask the right questions. Asking the right questions is what inquiry is all about.

Children are great at asking questions. They are naturally curious, and are constantly asking questions to make sense of their world.

Instead of just telling your child the answer, try one of these strategies.

First, you can get them to look up the answer. This will help them develop the ability to solve their own problems.Or, you can ask them "What do you think?" This will give you insight into what they already know, and then you can asl< them more questions to guide them to an answer.

An inquiry-based approach is seen throughout the Ontario Curriculum.

Students learn best when they are formulating their own questions and working towards solutions through discussion with their peers.

These are questions with a specific answer. Here are two examJlles:

January ’ s Environmental Theme: Waste Minimization

In Canada, we create a lot of garbage. We throw away too much paper, plastic bags, food, old toys, electronics and much, much more! The good news is that at our school we have made a really good start to reducing some of our waste. We recycle paper, cardboard and containers made of metal, glass and plastic. We try to photocopy double-sided and use GOOS bins (bins that hold paper that is Good On One Side and can still be used). We do waste audits to see what we are throwing away and it seems we need to try to reduce our food waste as well as our packaging. Start thinking about bringing uneaten food from lunch back home to eat as a snack after school because we find perfectly good apples and other fruit, or even uneaten sandwiches, in the school garbage cans.

The best way to solve the problem of too much waste is to not create it in the first place. We have been talking about reducing the number of things we buy and buying items that can be reused instead of immediately being thrown away and taking up more landfill space. For example: use cloth towels instead of paper towels, borrow most books from the library instead of buying them new, use cloth bags instead of plastic bags, use litterless lunch containers and a metal water bottle that you can refill, and use reusable gift bags instead of wrapping paper. The list goes on and on - there are so many ways you can help to reduce waste!

We also need to let our government know that we don't want all that extra packaging when we buy things. Other countries have already banned all that unnecessary plastic, cardboard and

Styrofoam that toys and cosmetics and games and food come covered with. So make a difference - write a persuasive letter to both the Ontario and Canadian Governments to ask them to be tougher on packaging laws. Our garbage dumps are filling up. They need to hear from you to stop all this waste!

Slogan of the month: Let's reduce our waste - our planet is worth it!
