November 2014 Principal’s Message: Glenbrook Students to Attend Kitchener “We Day”: On Tuesday, November 4th, Chris D’souza, author and human rights consultant, will be presenting to the students at Glenbrook. Grade five to eight students will have the opportunity to participate in an interactive workshop focusing on inclusive education. Glenbrook’s “Me To We” group have earned 16 tickets to attend the “We Day” in Kitchener on November 20th. Mrs. Bernard-McCabe and Mrs. Schafer will be taking these 16 students to this event. Using stories, Chris D’souza will explore the fundamental right of students to learn in a bias free environment. He will discuss the role that students, teachers and administrators can play in fostering equitable classrooms. Our Me to We team would like to thank parents for their continued support and look forward to holding many exciting events this year The presentation will examine the seven equity lenses and will conclude with an analysis of diversity in the broader community. Parent and community members are welcome to attend. The presentation will take place at 1:40 p.m. on November 4th, 2014. School Photos / Retake Day: School photo proofs were sent home with students last week. Photo orders are due back at Glenbrook no later than Tuesday November 4th, 2014. Edge Imaging photographers will be returning to our school on Monday, November 10th for photo retakes. If your child was absent for our original photo day, or if your child requires a photo retake, please make sure that he/she attends in the morning of Monday, November 10th. These students will have the opportunity to take part in an amazing day of inspirational speeches and performances from people like Dr. Dave Willliams, Shawn Desman, Spencer West and Craig and Marc Kielburger just to name a few. Glenbrook Natural Playground Initiative: Glenbrook’s Playground Committee is moving ahead with a plan to install a “natural playground” in the Junior / Senior Kindergarten playground area at the school. The vision is to transform the JK/SK playground from a fenced in concreate pad into a natural and interactive play setting which will be an extension of the classroom and provide a hands-on, fun and dynamic learning environment. Our hope is that it will take the form of natural components such as rocks, logs, trees, sand and other components including a log tunnel, hill slide, outdoor musical instruments and art panels. The new playground will foster creative and independent thinking while promoting teamwork through group play. The Glenbrook School Council raised $15 000 for this playground initiative last year and hopes to raise an equivalent amount again this year. The Playground Committee has applied for a $20 000 grant through CST (Canadian Scholarship Trust) organization. Glenbrook parents and friends can vote for this project between October 27th and November 10th by going to: http://learning projects.cst.org/ideas/389. Our playground proposal needs to receive enough “votes” to be in the top 25 ideas to move on to the next round of voting. Families and friends can vote up to three times per day for the proposal that we have submitted. Any support that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Let’s go Glenbrook! The team will practice from 7:00 until 8:00 a.m. each week beginning in November. We thank Ms. Gammage and Mr. Schooley for offering this program to our students. The flu is more serious for the very young and elderly. They can get the flu from school-aged children who don’t seem sick but may have a mild case. Get your free flu shot. It protects everyone. Visit www.wdgpublichealth.ca to find a flu clinic near you. If you don’t like needles, there is an alternative. FluMist is a nasal spray available for children and adults ages 2 to 59. We have managed to collect approximately $100 since the beginning of this fundraising initiative. If you have Canadian Tire money that you would be willing to donate, please place it in the designated drop-off box in the school office. Read This Newsletter and Win a Prize!!! Win a Hockey Stick: After your family has read this newsletter, please sign and detach this coupon. “Our family” must include at least one parent/guardian who has read the newsletter. This coupon must be placed in the yellow mailbox in the front office at Glenbrook school. A ballot will be drawn from the yellow mailbox each month indicating the winning family for the month. This month’s draw will be held on Friday, November 28th, 2014. Our family has read the newsletter corresponding to this draw. Family Name: ___________________________Parent’s Signature: ____________________________ Inclement Weather Procedures for Glenbrook Students: Glenbrook will be open when buses are cancelled. This is due to the fact that our school is not dependent on bus transportation and all of our students can walk to school. It is very important for parents/guardians to report student absences from school on the attendance line before 8:30 am, should you believe that weather conditions are such that it is unsafe for your child(ren) to walk to school, and you have made the decision to keep your child(ren) at home. Glenbrook does have an “information” mailbox. It is an “Inclement Weather Information Mailbox” that can be reached by dialing 519-925-0580, ext 410. Another alternative is to access our Board’s Transportation website: www.stwdsts.ca/. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and read the transportation information in the green box for Dufferin County. Progress Reports Arriving Home on November 13th: Students will be bringing home a “Progress Report” on Thursday, November 13th, 2014. Please remember that this Progress Report does not include “marks.” Instead it reports on learning skills or work habits, as well as, strengths and next steps to assist in improving student learning in subject areas. This Progress Report will tell you how your child is doing in all subjects using the words: “progressing very well,” “progressing well” or “progressing with difficulty.” After these reports go home, there will be an opportunity for parent/ teacher interviews. This is your chance to find out early in the school year how your child is progressing, what the school will do to help, and what you can do at home to support your child’s learning. At Glenbrook Elementary School, parent/teacher interviews will take place on the evening of Thursday, November 20th and during the designated P. D. day on Friday, November 21st, 2014. Some staff may interview on other days/evenings as well. Further information about Parent / Teacher interviews will be sent home with students during the first week of November. Students will receive their Provincial Report Cards in February and again at the end of June. These report cards follow a more traditional format with marks/letter grades for all subjects. Learning skills will once again be highlighted because developing good work habits is crucial for your child to be successful in school and later in life. Dogs on School Property: Parents are reminded that we have some children who are afraid of dogs and are very uncomfortable when in close proximity with these pets. It is extremely important that parents recognize these fears/concerns and that animals are NOT walked to school in the morning or at the end of the day. The safety of our students is always our primary concern. Dog owners who choose to exercise their animals on school property well before and after school hours are asked to clean up after these animals. We would like to keep our yard clean and safe for all students. We sincerely appreciate any assistance that you can provide to keep our yard clean. A Message From Mrs. Stewart in The School Library: Glenbrook READS! ends on Friday November 7th where Glenbrook’s favourite book will be announced and read by Mrs. Kennedy. In addition, four (4) copies of each book will be given away to our students. A HUGE “Thank You” to our Parent Council for supporting this school wide literacy event. Our second Book Fair will run from November 20th to November 25th. Books will be available to be purchased during school hours. The Book Fair will also be open during the evening of Parent-Teacher interviews (Wednesday, November 20th) and during the P.D. day on Friday, November 21st. The student with the best costume in each division (Primary / Junior / Intermediate) will win a free book! Every book that is purchased during our Book Fair helps build our library’s collection.
