care at 16. At 19, she had a son, a job and hopes for college. Now
she's struggling to fend for herself. This is an excellent portrayal of the

out in 2002. She grew up on welfare, lost her mother to AIDS, a
brother in a drug shooting and her father to alcohol abuse. She finds

since birth. Intelligent, unpredictable and self-destructive, he feels
suffocated by a system that won't let him be independent. He goes
AWOL, steals, lives on the street and is arrested and incarcerated.
Charges are dropped and his case is closed. He talks about leaving
the bad things behind and prepares for a new life in Alaska where no

separated from her siblings at 9, a veteran of 10 foster-care
placements by 18, she excels in high school and enters college.
Lacking family and financial support and battling addiction, she suffers

community college and finds a job, but her story ends on a tragic note.

sexual abuse and several suicide attempts. He grew up without a
family and aged out with nowhere to go. Still, he finishes high school,
and in spite of many obstacles, finds work. He bounces around from

plunges into America's Jim Crow South. Through Myrdal's story and
