Technical Data Sheet DRYCRYL™ DP-2903 100% Acrylic Redispersible Powder Introduction DRYCRYL™ DP-2903 acrylic dry polymer is a 100% acrylic, redispersible powder designed to improve the performance of Portland cement mortars. Incorporating this powder allows compounders to attain the dramatic improvements in adhesion, abrasion resistance, flexural strength and exterior durability that are associated with acrylics. DRYCRYL™ DP-2903 is supplied as a powder that can be blended directly with aggregate, cement and other formulation aids to form convenient and cost-effective “one-pack” systems. One-component systems reduce environmental waste (used containers) and lower shipping and packaging costs. Typical Applications DRYCRYL™ DP-2903 polymer was developed for use in cementitious applications in which a one-package dry mix is desired, such as: • Dry mortar mixes for patching, paving toppings and masonry • Shotcrete (dry) • Ceramic tile thinset mortars and grouts • Sprayable cementitious coatings • Stuccos • Self-leveling underlayments/overlayments Features and Benefits To the end user • Acrylic performance – excellent mechanical strengths and adhesion, excellent exterior performance (wet and dry) • Low water demand with good workability • Excellent thin section toughness and adhesion • Exceptional resistance to UV degradation To the compounder • Excellent storage stability (e.g., free flowing) • Lower shipping costs • Wide formulating latitude: compatible with commonly used additives • No admixture container disposal costs DRYCRYL™ DP-2903 gives compounders the ability to obtain the advanced interior and exterior performance properties associated with all-acrylic cement modifiers, now in dry form. Typical Physical Properties These properties are typical but should not be considered specifications. These performance advantages make DRYCRYL™ DP-2903 polymer an excellent choice for use in exterior applications or applications where water resistance is critical. DRYCRYL™ DP-2903 has shown excellent compatibility and performance in fast-setting mortars. Exterior Durability Cement mortars made with 100% acrylic DRYCRYL™ DP-2903 are more resistant to weathering than mortars using modifiers based on other chemistries. As is typical of 100% acrylic polymers, DRYCRYL™ DP-2903 is highly resistant to the effects of ultraviolet radiation. More than 20 years of exterior exposure on mortars modified with 100% acrylic dry polymers show the exceptional performance advantages of all-acrylic cement modifiers over those of non-acrylic polymers. Adhesion and Toughness Mortars prepared with DRYCRYL™ DP-2903 polymer show excellent adhesion, as well as thin section toughness. Excellent adhesion, both wet and dry, is observed on a variety of substances, including concrete, wood, metal, gypsum sheathing, cement board, masonry and polystyrene insulation board. Workability Cement mortars modified with DRYCRYL™ DP-2903 polymer display excellent workability. Mortars modified with DRYCRYL™ DP-2903 require less water than mortars modified with vinyl acetate copolymers. Additionally, mortars modified with DRYCRYL™ DP-2903 exhibit excellent pot life, retaining smooth consistency longer without a false set, even at elevated temperatures. Comparative Performance Data Data are available comparing the performance of mortars modified with DRYCRYL™ DP-2903 polymer with those of unmodified mortars and mortars modified with a variety of other dry polymers. Storage and Handling DRYCRYL™ DP-2903 is a thermoplastic polymer and ideally should be stored at room temperature (circa 70°F). Prolonged storage at temperatures above 100°F should be avoided. Like most other dry polymers, care should be taken to limit stacking of pallets to avoid compaction. This is especially critical in warm climates. Test Methods Details about test methods used to evaluate the performance of DRYCRYL™ DP-2903 polymer are available from your local Dow representative. Formulation Guidelines Your local Dow representative can provide general information regarding cement formulation techniques as well as more specific information on formulating with DRYCRYL™ DP-2903 dry polymer cement modifier. Safe Handling Information Toxicity screening tests conducted on closely related analogs of DRYCYRL™ DP-2903 suggest that this product should be essentially nontoxic by single acute oral or dermal exposure and that it may also be a mild to moderate skin and eye irritant. Components of cement used in conjunction with DRYCRYL™ DP-2903 may also possess significant skin and eye irritation potential. As is typical when working with powders, ensure that adequate respiratory protection measures are taken. Please refer to the safety data sheet for more specific respiratory protection measures.
