In the majority of cases, the fewest number of electives a Grade 10 Preparatory
student will have next year is two.
Students taking Studies Mathematics will not have to take Grade 11 Preparatory
Math.
Students taking ab initio German or Spanish do not have to take Grade 10
Spanish or German but can if they wish.
In some cases, students may have as many as 4 electives as in the second
timetable example.
This is the payoff of having taken summer school Civics and Careers.

Students pick one course from each Group.
Although Group 6 is optional, we encourage students to study HL Arts as the
academic and personal benefits are significant. See the IB Arts at Guelph CVI
PowerPoint for more information
Options at GCVI determined by student interest survey.
Math Studies (SL) is a course designed for students going into the social
sciences (equivalent of 3U Advanced Functions and 4U Data Management).
Standard Level math is a course designed for those students giong into the
experimental sciences (ie: business, computer sciences, life science,
engineering).
We are not offering HL Math because it is difficult to prepare students and it isn’t
a necessary university entrance course. SL already goes beyond OSSD 4U
courses. Worldwide only 10% of IB DP students take HL math.
Students are concurrently earning their OSSD IB Diploma.

Which knowledge claims are you to accept? In TOK students examine
knowledge claims and explore knowledge issues (inquiry that arises from
wondering about the status of one of our knowledge claims- often starts with the
question “How do we know?”)
How do we know orphans need our help? How do we know we are suited to
help? How do we know if our good intentions translate into positive change?

Is this image connected to the one son the previous slide? If so, in what ways?
How does this image challenge the knowledge claim on the previous slide?
What is the knowledge issue?
o Is voluntourism an appropriate way to help children in developing
countries?
Good intentions are not enough and volunteering may cause more harm than
good. Needs to be win-win.
A successful volunteer experience focuses on the benefits to the
individual/community you are helping. It is not about you. It is about them. Your
contributions need to be sustainable and relationships must be long-lasting. Do
you agree?


Some possible success criteria of a Guelph CVI service learning trip:
o The needs of the individuals and community we are helping are priority.
o We have conducted extensive research on the organizations we support
to ensure our good intentions lead to positive results and are not abused.
o We are building lasting relationships and our contributions are sustainable.
o We have educated and informed the school community of who we are
helping, how and why?
o We have learned some of the language and about the culture and history
of the communities we plan to visit.
