In Memoriam
It is with sincere regret that we report
that Dr. Swapan Sen passed
away on March 6 following a
four-year battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife,
Banasri ("Luna"); son, Soham;
daughter, Sanhita; four
brothers and sisters; and
seven nieces and nephews.
Dr. Sen was born in Gandharbapur, a
small village in rural West Bengal, India, and
studied economics at the University of
Calcutta. He emigrated to the United States
in 1987 to acquire a Ph.D. in Finance from
the University of Nebraska and taught for
more than 30 years at universities including
Michigan Technological University in
Houghton; Christopher Newport University in
Newport News, VA; and most recently
Winston-Salem State University. Over ten
years as a professor at WSSU, Dr. Sen served
as a recognized teacher, member of the
Faculty Senate, and Coordinator of the MBA
program, globalizing the curriculum and
facilitating exchanges with academic faculty
all over the world.
Dr. Sen had a passion for scholarship,
the arts and bridge. He published not only
academic articles in peer-reviewed journals,
but also a collection of short stories and
essays in his native Bengali. In bridge, he
achieved a Gold Life Master ranking and he
encouraged intellectual curiosity in his
children and his students.
A public memorial service will be held
on March 16, 2013, at Ghent Methodist
Church, 531 Raleigh Road in Norfolk, VA. In
lieu of flowers, the family asks that
donations be made in Dr. Sen’s name to the
American Cancer Society.
Dean Jessica Bailey commented on the
immediate outpouring of love and respect
from both faculty, staff and students, “Dr.
Sen was always willing to take time to
support the scholarly pursuits of colleagues
and the development of young minds at the
University. We will miss him.”
