INSID E THIS ISS UE: FOCUS News from the School of Business and Economics May 27, 2013 Volume 4, Issue 20 A Message from Dean Bailey The beginning of summer school marks the change of season on a university campus even better than the summer solstice. Winston-Salem State University moved into the new season last week with the beginning of the first summer session, which runs from May 21 to June 25. While fewer classes are running in the Reynolds Center, the campus remains busy with a variety of programs and projects designed to improve the physical plant and provide outreach to the wider Winston-Salem community. Two major construction projects are still in high gear—the Reaves Building and the Success Center. In addition, work will soon begin on renovations to the R.J. Reynolds Center. Modifications will be made to existing offices and new office space will be added to the building. These modifications are made possible by a grant from Title III. Many of our graduate students will be accompanying Dr. Craig Richardson for a Study Abroad experience in Shanghai this summer. The trip will be an examination of recent economic development in China, as well as exposure to the political system that guides the country’s recent economic surge. For those of you who have not yet visited the SBE Finance Lab, summer is the ideal time to do so. Please contact Mr. Ben Greene at greenebp@wssu.edu to arrange a tour. I hope to see you in the Reynolds Center soon. FOCUS News Page 2 SBE Completes AACSB Business School Questionnaire Each spring brings a request from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) for the School of Business and Economics’ participation in their annual Business School Questionnaire (BSQ). The AACSB is the accreditation organization for the School of Business and Economics and the BSQ participation permits the School to be able to see comparative statistics on other schools of business. This online survey asks for information about our institutional characteristics, including the year of founding, accreditations with other organizations, the nature of the school (e.g. public or private), religious affiliation, and regional accrediting agency (e.g. Southern Association of Colleges and Schools). AACSB also seeks financial, programmatic, and other information about its members. The most intensive parts of the BSQ track statistics on undergraduate and graduate enrollment, ethnicity, admissions, and employment and information on faculty including the number, tenure status, ethnicity, citizenship, and qualifications. Once this information is submitted to the AACSB, it is compiled and released only to Schools of Business who complete the questionnaire. We can then use the comparative data to view the School of Business and Economics at Winston-Salem State University in a more global fashion. The Winston-Salem State University School of Business and Economics is very proud to be one of only 697 of the world’s more than 13,000 business programs to have earned accreditation by AACSB. These schools produce graduates that are highly skilled and more desirable to employers than other non-accredited schools. Dr. Madjd-Sadjadi, a native of California, served in the capacity of Chair of the Department of Economics and Finance since January of 2011 and has an exceptional background of service to both the academic and government sector.
