S LITIE I C A F S C C U August 2009 Fe at u re d C rew : M A I N T E NA N C E Our Maintenance Crew works on many projects that continue to make the campus function smoothly without much of the campus even knowing. We have a great crew made up of Rick Landis, Keith Valentine, and Grady Weeks and student employees Ryan Parrish, Kyle Micklich, and Brett Swaving. Also, running our Sign Shop and all its needs are student employees, KT Potter and Steven Masopust. The Maintenance crew does everything for the campus that the Plumbing, Electrical, Grounds, Janitorial, and HVAC departments don’t do including moving furniture, assisting with snow removal in the winter, producing and hanging all types of signs and banners, hanging pictures, transporting tables and chairs for event setups, various handyman type repairs, producing keys, lock and door repair, repairing/replacing windows and many more things. You name it, we probably have a hand in it somehow. We currently respond for general maintenance of 58 build- ings across campus (including University Office Park) which translates to a grand total of approximately 1,681,467 square feet of space (39 acres). That’s a LOT of keys, signage, and furniture!! During the weeks of August before school starts, our crew will be assisting in a remodel of the second set of restrooms in the Engineering and Applied Sciences area. They will also be assisting in the removal of furniture and usable hardware in the Science Building in preparation for its renovation. We have many large projects coming up in accordance with the moves of groups from all over campus into University Hall. Our painters will be painting and refurbishing many of the rooms at University Hall that were made vacant by occupants moving out and into the brand new Science & Engineering (SENG) Building, for which we are still moving new furniture into for the new occupants. They are painting throughout the campus with a low VAC paint which is more environmentally friendly and less odor intensive. They will also be moving into areas in Main Hall and Columbine in the near future. This means that campus staff will be able to provide better health and safety measures in a more effective and efficient manner. SUMMER JOBS FOR YOUTH Our staff has increased this summer, temporarily. Facilities Services is participating in a program through the Pikes Peak Work Force Center Along with the SENG Building opening (PPWFC) which is using the stimulus bill to put disadvantaged youth to up, the campus is gradually initiating a work from June through September new key system which will be installed 30. In order to keep up with the growth and services of the UCCS campus, the Facilities Services department has organized itself into two primary areas; Planning & Construction and Physical Plant Maintenance. The Planning & Construction team is actively working major projects including the Science and Engineering Bldg (SENG), Events Center, and the renovation of the existing Science Bldg. The Physical Plant team includes five work groups; Maintenance, Grounds, Electrical, Plumbing/HVAC, and Custodial. Their responsibilities include maintaining 890,675 square feet of General Fund buildings along with 250 acres of landscaped property. Our Facilities Services administrative team is the glue that keeps our teams connected. Each team is committed to the continued improvement of the UCCS campus and serving you.
