UCCS Facilities Services
Time to Celebrate!
By: Stan Rovira
Facilities Services is working
with the university’s IT department to implement a new
online work order submittal
system. Stay tuned for further
information as it comes online.
In the meantime the current
system is still operational.
Please call our service desk for
emergencies.
The Facilities Services department consists of four main
units; the university’s Physical
Plant, the university’s Planning,
Design and Construction, the
university’s Sustainability Office
and the Auxiliary Operations.
The university’s Physical Plant
has four work groups; Building
Maintenance, Outdoor Services, Electrical Maintenance
and Custodial Services in the
university’s office and classroom buildings and grounds.
The Planning, Design and Construction unit oversees all the
design and construction on the
campus. The Sustainability
Office provides sustainability
programming, oversees the
recycling program and provides
oversight of the campus energy
use. The Auxiliary Operations
unit provides building maintenance, grounds maintenance,
and custodial services for the
auxiliary buildings such as the
University Center, the housing
facilities and other student
support facilities.
Senior Project Manager
Whew, we made it! As late as
mid-June, I thought we would
have had a caution tape cutting instead of a ribbon cutting for the Academic Office
Building. My hat is off to all
who pulled together this
project on time. Many, many
hours, long days, and weekends went into making this
happen.
My records indicate that it
was just 21 months ago that
we issued the Request for
Proposal to design and construct the building. During
that duration, we added the
fifth floor to the project and
still managed to move into
the building on schedule.
The ribbon-cutting was a time
of incredible satisfaction for
me, as I am extremely proud
of both the appearance and
functionality of the building.
Some features of the building
are:

42% energy savings by
comparison with standards used by the USGBC
LEED certification program. This makes this
the most energy-efficient
building we have constructed to date at
UCCS.

Significant day lighting to
all offices.

A welcoming and colorful interior.
Facilities Annual BBQ
On July 17, 2014 Facilities
Services hosted their annual Summer BBQ. There
was amazing food, people
and conversation. But
mostly, there was food.
Keith Woodring was
awarded first place in the
dessert contest for
his Apple Dump Cake entry. It
was basically an apple pie crumble, except better, and with a
less attractive name.
This year we presented a
slideshow with pictures of
the Physical Plant employees
from their Elementary school
years. Fun was had by all.

Many informal social
spaces.

A spectacular roof deck
accessed from the fifth
floor.

An interesting and textured exterior.

Water-efficient plant
selection featuring native
plants along with a computerized irrigation system.
Stop by, enjoy the building
and say hello to the new occupants of AOB.
Welcome New Employees!
Auxiliaries and
Facilities Unite
The department will be working diligently
over the next year to identify refinements
in the organizational structure as well as
efficiencies in our processes. We will
share our journey of change in this newsletter as it moves forward.
Facilities Services recently underwent
some significant organizational changes. While the final “organizational
chart” has not been set, the recent
changes include the Executive Director of Auxiliary Operations, the Director of Physical Plant, the Director
of Sustainability, the Director of Design and University Architect, and the
Senior Project Manager reporting to
the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Administration. This change brings together all the units that have a direct
impact on the quality of the university’s facilities. This change will allow
the various units to work together
more closely and provide efficiencies
in service delivery.

As of July 21, Facilities Services
is proud to introduce our new
Physical Plant Associate Director: Jeff Reed.

extremely helpful.” Jeff enjoys
working in the Facilities Services environment because,
“Facilities Management is a

Parking Lot 103 Construction
By: Brad Johnson
A new 244 space parking lot
has been constructed near
our campus Greenhouse. It
has a bus stop, shelter,
emergency phone, LED
lighting and native plantings.
Contact Cards
Whenever you’re out and about on
campus be sure to keep an eye out for Facilities Services’ new
contact cards located near the publicly accessible landlines.

No Snail Mail Here
Facilities Services is known
for taking care of things
“behind the scenes,” but the
mailroom crew takes this to
the next level. Few consider
the workings that are going
on when we send out our
mail.
Between the three of them
Danny, Larry, and Jerry have
over 100 years of experience
in the postal service, 105 to
be exact.
When asked what their favorite thing about working at the
UCCS Mailroom is, everyone
had similar answers about the
friendliness of everyone on
campus and just being able to
help out.
There is an open house tentatively scheduled for Columbus
Day (October 13th). There will
be refreshments and snacks
provided along with good company.
More information will be provided
as this date approaches.
As a friendly reminder please remember that internal mail only
requires the full name and the department name, not the room
number, of the recipient. Also
please be sure to include a return
address. Please feel free to stop by
or give the mailroom a call anytime
a mail design or addressing question arises. They are here to help.
Shape-N UP
With an incredible amount of growth
occurring across campus many people
have been wondering how the parking
system will accommodate the increasing capacity.
The new system includes the Alpine
Garage and the new lot 103. There
are eight different permits available
based on each demographics’ needs.
Both semester and annual passes are
available for most of the options.
To make sure people are exactly where they need to be the parking areas are
labeled by shapes, colors, and numbers. Please contact (719) 255-3528 or parking
@uccs.edu with questions.
