MONTHLY PROGRAM

Time:
9:00 AM refreshments, 9:30 AM program
Place:
Haworth Conference Center, Hope College
Program:
“We Know What We Are, But Not What We May Be”: Art, Theatre, and the collective works of
William Shakespeare: A personal journey into the wasteland of our American Industrial Prison
Complex. Curt L. Tofteland, Founder and Producing Director, Shakespeare Behind Bars, Inc.
Curt L. Tofteland is the founder of the internationally acclaimed Shakespeare Behind Bars (SBB) program. From 19952008, Curt facilitated the SBB/KY program at the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex, producing and directing fourteen
Shakespeare productions. The 2003 SBB/KY production of The Tempest, was chronicled by Philomath Films producing a
documentary, Shakespeare Behind Bars, that premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and went on to screened at
40+ film festivals around the world, winning 11 film awards. Curt currently facilitates the adult Shakespeare Behind
Bars/Michigan programs at the Earnest C. Brooks Correctional Facility in Muskegon Heights and SBB’s first co-gender,
court-ordered juvenile Shakespeare Behind / Beyond Bars programs at the Ottawa County Juvenile Detention Center and
the Juvenile Justice Institute. Curt is a national and international speaker. Curt has spoken at over forty colleges and
universities across the United States and has delivered talks at TEDx Berkeley, TEDxEast (NYC), and TEDx Macatawa.
For his work as a Prison Arts Practitioner, Curt received fellowships from the Fulbright and Petra Foundations, as well as
a Doctorate of Humane Letters from Bellarmine University. Curt is a published essayist and poet. Currently, he is writing
his own book, Behind the Bard-Wire: Reflection, Responsibility, Redemption, & Forgiveness . . . The Transformative
Power of Art, Theatre, and Shakespeare. Curt has developed an association with Hope College, where he has taught
Introduction to Theatre and directed Sweeney Todd for the 2012-13 academic year and Hope Summer Repertory
Theatre, where he directed Romeo and Juliet for the 2013 season, and played Uncle Chris in I Remember Mama for the
2011 season. From 1989-2008, Curt served as producing artistic director of Kentucky Shakespeare Festival where he
produced fifty Shakespeare productions, directed twenty-five Shakespeare productions, and acted in eight Shakespeare
Productions. The mission of SHAKESPEARE BEHIND BARS is to offer theatrical encounters with personal and social
issues to the incarcerated, allowing them to develop life skills that will ensure their successful reintegration into society.
Bringing 35 years of professional theatre experience as a producer, playwright, director, actor, and innovative arts
educator, Curt L. Tofteland enters the secreted world of the “other” contained within double razor-wire fences
surrounding islands of despair. Armed only with an open heart, fearless creativity, a willingness to dwell in the abyss of
not knowing, and a collection of the works of William Shakespeare, Curt L. Tofteland manifests Restorative Circles of
Reconciliation in which to examine “Know Thyself” through four questions:
Who am I?
What do I love?
How will I live my life, knowing I will die?
What is my gift to humankind?
Who among us wishes to be remembered for our very worst deed?
Please join us for this unique program on May 6, 2014…and please turn this page over for more important
information regarding this meeting!

SPECIAL NOTE: as announced at our April meeting, we will be asking all HASP members present to
complete a very brief survey at the end of this meeting. Surveys and pencils will be distributed at the end
of the program. Please plan to stay a few extra minutes to complete this. Arrangements have been made
with Freedom Village for the bus to pick up at 11:00 a.m.!
Note: Parking in Pillar Church lot will not be available on this day due to Tulip Time and we expect parking may be
difficult. Hopefully there will be more space in the student lots, as they will have left for the summer. Please carpool as
much as possible.
MONHLY MEETING PARKING: Lot Z – behind Anderson-Werkman building is reserved for HASP members (marked with
orange cones), there are some available spaces in Lot U (for Haworth guests, behind the Kepple House by Dykstra Hall), labeled
street parking where available, and the lot behind New Holland Brewery and 84 East where available. The newer downtown parking
ramp is also a great option! If you live at Freedom Village, please consider taking their bus over.

HASP Scholarship
On Thursday, March 27th I had the distinct pleasure of attending the Hope College spring scholarship luncheon
on behalf of our endowed HASP scholarship. This scholarship was endowed by the HASP membership in 2003
and is available to a junior or senior student. I was able to meet our current recipient, Oude “Derek”
Karadsheh, class of 2015.
Derek is a junior majoring in geology and
environmental studies. He recently came back from a
research trip on spring break to the Grand Canyon in
conjunction with a course he is currently taking. Derek
loves his major, his professors, and his choice to attend
Hope. In fact, he told me that he had never heard of
Hope before high school but two of his favorite teachers
attended Hope so that is how he decided to attend here.
Derek graduated from Forest Hills Northern High
school in Grand Rapids. He was born in San Francisco
but spent part of his childhood in the city of Jordan,
from which his family originates. He came to Michigan
when he was about 8 or 9 years old. He knows Arabic
and some Spanish and has a very large family. He
currently also serves as a Resident Assistant and has
applied to do summer research and stay here on campus
this summer. He is very grateful for his scholarship
assistance which makes it possible for him to be at
Hope!
Additionally, as President Anderson wrote in the February 2014 bulletin, the Board of Directors voted to endow
a second HASP scholarship by transferring $50,000.00 from HASP reserve funds to Hope College. This
transaction was completed the end of March in order to assure that this new scholarship would be available for
an incoming student in the fall of 2014. This scholarship is also based on academic merit and financial need,
however it is available to underclassmen which was a need stated by the college. We have since received a
letter of gratitude from Hope President John C. Knapp thanking us for our commitment to Hope College and
students and for our partnership in Hope’s mission.
We will continue to keep you notified as we receive information on what two students are rewarded these
scholarships for the next academic year. Thank you for your generous support!
