A 1000-Mile Great Lakes Walk, Loreen Niewenhuis
***REMINDER: JULY & AUGUST MONTHLY PROGRAMS ARE AT CHRIST MEMORIAL***
In 2009, Loreen Niewenhuis walked the perimeter of Lake Michigan and wrote the bestselling book,
A 1000-MILE WALK ON THE BEACH. In 2012, she took another long journey, covering 1000 miles of
shoreline touching all five Great Lakes. The book about this latest adventure, A 1000-MILE GREAT LAKES
WALK, explores the entire Great Lakes system.
In this presentation, she will take you along the shores of all five Great Lakes and many of the waterways
connecting them. In words, photos, and video, you’ll explore the geology, hydrology, and natural history of the
largest system of fresh water lakes in the world. She will also illuminate the threats to this massive ecosystem:
invasive species, pollution, destruction of wetlands, and the gradual warming of the lakes.
Niewenhuis speaks with the authority of an expert as she has a M.S. degree in the biological sciences. She raises
important questions about preserving our wild places and protecting the fragile ecosystems on which we all
depend.
From the time she was a young girl climbing sand dunes and splashing in its cool waters, Loreen has felt
connected and drawn to Lake Michigan. She decided to explore the lake fully by walking all the way around it.
The fascinating account of her journey, A 1,000 Mile Walk on the Beach, was released in 2011 by Crickhollow
Books. This book made the Heartland Indie Bestseller List.
In 2012, she took another 1000-mile hike along the shores of all five Great Lakes. The book about this
adventure, A 1000-Mile Great Lakes Walk was published by Crickhollow Books in 2013. This book won the
Great Lakes Great Reads Award. Website www.LakeTrek.com.

Sympathy
We extend our sympathy to the family and friends of the following HASP member:
David VerLee –David joined HASP in March of 2000 after a career as an ophthalmologist. He passed away on
June 3, 2014. His wife, Jayne, is also a HASP member.
Memo on Mentoring…
A person wishing to join HASP is asked to attend at least one monthly meeting and is required to have a
mentor. HASP board members “at large” will be serving as mentors for people who do not know someone in
2
HASP. We have more and more inquiries from people who have learned about HASP through the internet or
other sources.
The definition of a mentor is a wise and trusted counselor. We hope each of you who bring a new member to
HASP becomes that counselor. Offer to pick them up for meetings. For the first few months, sit with them and
introduce them to a variety of people at the HASP monthly meetings. Encourage them to take classes and
discuss the curriculum with them when they have their first opportunity to sign up for classes. Show them the
location of the HASP classroom. Make sure they know how to get in touch with committee chairmen if they
have questions. Sign up for a HASP special event together. Ask if they are interested in volunteering through
HASP and connect them with the service committee. The membership committee feels that your active
mentoring will encourage our new members to get involved and stay involved in all aspects of HASP.

SERVICE
Service Chair: Larry Lynn, oldrun@aol.com
Greater Ottawa County United Way Day of Caring
The Service Committee of HASP has again been invited to recruit a team of HASP members to participate in
the Greater Ottawa County United Way Day of Caring to be held on September 18th. This is a county wide
effort for teams of local volunteers to provide services for non-profits. It will involve less than 4 hours of
service (probably in the afternoon) and we will be assigned a project suitable for seniors. Last year we provided
services to the Boersma Cottage at Resthaven on 40th Street. Please consider joining our HASP team of
volunteers for this event. For further information or to put your name on the volunteer list please contact Larry
Lynn at 399-0700 or oldrun@aol.com.
Request from Hope Engineering Department - Problems Wanted!
The Engineering Department is looking for a design problem for a group of freshmen students. These students
are involved in a pilot program that includes a design experience and is intended to increase retention of female
students. Last year the students worked with a woman with cerebral palsy and very limited movement. Student
teams designed an apparatus that allowed her to eat snacks while she was home alone. Since these students
were freshmen and this was only part of the class, the final product was not usable but the process was very
beneficial to the students. It was also a great asset to have a 'customer' that met with the students initially to
describe the problem and then came back to see the final results. We had positive feedback about the experience
from both the ‘customer’ and the students.
So, we are looking for someone who could serve as a customer and who has a ‘problem’ that the students could
work on this year. The class meets during the fall semester and we try to finish by the end of November.
Example problems could be a device to help with mobility or allow you to do something that you used to be
able to do or would like to be able to do. This type of problem has a connection to Biomedical Engineering
which would ideally be a focus. We can’t guarantee a final product but it could be a fun process and it’s great
to have someone to serve as a customer that isn't the professor.
If you are interested or know someone who may be able to help us, please e-mail me at polasek@hope.edu.
Thanks a lot! Katie Polasek, Assistant Professor of Engineering

HASP Office
Kim Mendels, Executive Director
Thank you to all who completed a HASP survey in May. If you were not at the Annual Meeting and Luncheon
on June 3rd, you can find a link to a brief PowerPoint and summary of the survey results on our HASP website,
www.hope.edu/hasp at the bottom of the front page.
There were 382 responses, or 60.3% of the membership – which I am told by the Frost Center for Research, is a
very good return rate! The HASP Board of Directors has been given the results and a special appointed subcommittee of the Board will discuss them more in depth and make recommendations to the Board for future
planning. We are also in communication with the administrative body of the College as to how the needs and
growth of HASP fit into the strategic planning process Hope is going through now and ways we can strengthen
our beneficial relationship.
We also appreciate the many written comments provided and value your input. We understand that in an
organization this size it is difficult to meet every individual need. There are often many factors to consider
when arranging course scheduling and special events that may not be obvious to those not involved in the
process. For example days/dates for trips or events are based on bus availability, venue availability, special
pricing and/or conflicts with other events being held in the community, the life of the college, or even weather
predictions! The Special Events committee realizes it is not always ideal for every member’s personal schedule
but appreciates your input and ideas.
Course scheduling is generally most dependent on availability of the presenter and their requested dates and
times. The curriculum committee works with those preferences first, and does not necessarily aim to have
fewer classes at certain times of the year – it is mostly dependant on the number of course proposals we receive
and presenter preferences for when it is held. Several members expressed an interest in knowing what the
participation rate of our total membership is in HASP courses. We are able to track this for the last 5 years in
our QuickBooks program and are pleased to report that on average, 430+ members, or 71%, enroll annually in
courses.
Additionally, it is important for you to know that after researching several other like organizations in our
surrounding area, we are the only ones who offer courses every day, not concurrent, and provides courses in
July and August. We are also the lowest in terms of course fees and staff costs. HASP operates with just barely
under one full time staff position (Exec. Director: Half time, Administrative Assistant: 16.5 hours, 46 weeks of
the year). We are very efficient with our resources and extremely grateful for the many hours of work and
dedication put in by committee members and volunteers – THANK YOU!
We will continue to analyze and include the survey results in our conversations and planning for the future of
HASP and again, we thank you for your time and responses!
Summer Office Hours
The office will be closed on Fridays and at times when there are no courses scheduled. If you need to drop
something off and we are not here, please feel free to slide it under the door and we will get it the next day. The
office operates without our Administrative Assistant, Amy Berarducci, from mid June to mid August so please
allow additional time for office requests. Thank you!
