At 5,050' Fort Davis is the highest town in

Texas. Located in the Davis Mountains of comfortable year round climate. The average summer high is 88° with low humidity and the average winter low is 30°.

Originally a military post established in

1854, Fort Davis is nestled in the heart of the Davis Mountains. View spectacular scenery, abundant wildlife, unique geological formations, historic buildings and one of the darkest night skies in the U.S.

Indian Lodge Built in 1933 by the Civilian

Conservation Corps. A pueblo style hotel with restaurant and pool located in Davis

Fort Davis National Historic Site- One of the best remaining examples of a restored frontier military fort in the country. 8-5 daily

McDonald Observatory- One of the major astronomical research facilities in the world.

Open 10-5 daily, the Visitor’s Center has extensive exhibits, a theater, gift shop and the

Star Date Café. Solar viewing and guided tours are scheduled for 11am and 2pm daily.

Star parties are held on Tuesday, Friday and

Fort Davis Historic Walking or Driving Tour

A one and one half mile tour, describing 23 restored public buildings. Some date back to the late 1800’s.

Overland Trail Museum. Open Tuesday through Friday from 1pm to 5pm. Closed during December, January, and February. Numerous historic exhibits, records, pictures and the cultural history of Jeff Davis County. Educational programs and guided tours are available. 432-426-3404

A community without traffic lights or chain stores, Fort Davis is known for its artisans and merchants, many of whom specialize in local handmade crafts. Hand dipped and flavored nuts, locally made fudge, along with western art and jewelry, are just some of the unique items that can be found here.
