The industrial annual formats offer both historical and restated data. The industrial quarterly formats offer restated data as reported by the company. The restated data allows analysts to compare current and prior years’ results on a comparable basis and determine financial trends and growth rates. For most companies, annual and quarterly data is available for up to 20 years and 48 quarters. The industrial files include the following: Active Files The Primary, Supplementary, Tertiary File contains the largest companies on the New York and American Stock Exchanges, including all companies comprising the S&P Industrial Index, and companies listed on major exchanges. The Full Coverage File contains NASDAQ National Market System companies, companies listed on regional exchanges, publicly held companies trading common stock, and wholly owned subsidiaries trading preferred stock or debt. Expanded Files The Expanded Files contain active U.S., Canadian and ADR companies and will integrate new data being reported for SFAS 142 and other highly requested fundamental items. Canadian Files The Canadian File contains more than 900 major Canadian industrial companies that report in Canadian currency. Research Files The Industrial Research File contains companies that have been deleted from the Primary, Supplementary, Tertiary, Over-theCounter, and Full Coverage files due to bankruptcy, acquisition or merger, leveraged buyout, or because they became private companies. Back Data Files Compustat North America 7/2003 Industrial files are also available for back periods. Annual back data is displayed from 1950 up to the current 20 year period. Quarterly back data is displayed from 1962 up to the current 48 quarter period. Annual The Character ASCII format requires eight records per company to present 350 data items for 20 years. Record 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Data Item Numbers 1 - 175 1 - 175 1 - 175 1 - 175 176 - 350 176 - 350 176 - 350 176 - 350 Years earliest five years succeeding five years succeeding five years most current five years earliest five years succeeding five years succeeding five years most current five years All fields of the data array in Industrial Annual ASCII records 1-4 are a 15.4 precision except item 27, which has a precision of 24.12. All fields of the data array in Industrial Annual ASCII records 5-8 are 15.4 precision except item 202, which has a precision of 24.12. There are no special block or record control words and the data is “streamed” in nature. The logical record length and blocksize is 13612 characters.. The DCB may be written: DCB=(RECFM=F,LRECL=13612,BLKSIZE=13612),LABEL=(,NL) (If a file is not being used, please disregard the LABEL parameter in the DCB statement.) Quarterly The Character ASCII format requires 12 records per company to present 232 data items for 48 quarters. Each record contains data items #1 through #232 for each of four quarters. All fields of the data array in Industrial Quarterly ASCII record are a 15.4 precision, except items 17 and 100, which have a precision of 24.12. Chapter 6 – Compustat Character ASCII File Formats 1 There are no special block or record control words and the data is “streamed” in nature. Each logical record is 14968 characters in length. Records are blocked in groups of three. Each block is 44904 characters in length. The DCB may be written: DCB=(RECFM=F,LRECL=14968, BLKSIZE=44904), LABEL=(,NL) (If a file is not being used, please disregard the LABEL parameter in the DCB statement.) Header Record The header record format is identical to that of the company records. It is always the first record on the file and is identified by zeros in the CNUM field. This information is provided in the DATA field of the header record. Header records may contain default data. Quarterly header records have header record information in the first record only. The remaining two records will have default data. Record Format The next pages provide the technical specifications for header records and the complete industrial record formats for the Annual and Quarterly files. Default Data Header and Trailer Records may contain Default Data. For Floating Point fields, the default is 0 or NA for data slots. For Character fields, the default is Character Blanks or zeros. For Integer fields, the default is 0. these items when necessary. Companies will report Impairment of Goodwill and other intangibles when the write-down occurs. Impairment of Goodwill and other intangibles will be classified as a Special Item on the Income Statement and collected as a separate supplemental item as well. With this presentation, the current balancing models of the Balance Sheet and the Income Statement do not need to change. S&P will also collect the amount of amortization of goodwill and other intangibles that a company would need to add back to the prior year. This will allow our users to make the prior year consistent with the current year that the company adopts SFAS 142. Companies may report this information in a transition table in the notes on both an annual and quarterly basis. Since the majority of the companies appear to be presenting Amortization of Goodwill as a net number we will collect this item net. If the company presents a Gross number we will collect this item gross with a footnote. General information for Expanded Files: There are two Expanded files, one for Annual and one for Quarterly data. The Annual Expanded file may contain up to 20 years of information, but for most of the items the data will be for the most current period until additional history has accumulated. The Quarterly Expanded file may contain up to 12 years (48 quarters) of information, but for most of the items the data will be for the most current year until additional history has accumulated. The files will contain variable number of records per company depending on the number of years or quarters available. The files will be ASCII pipe ( | ) delimited. The files should contain active U.S., Canadian and ADR companies. Annual File: Each record will contain the following information: Overview of Expanded Files Standard & Poor’s (S&P) created the Expanded Files to integrate new data being reported for SFAS 142 and other highly requested fundamental items. Permanent Number (GVKEY), CUSIP, Mnemonic, Item Number, Fiscal year end month (01-12), Data Year (YYYY), Value or Data Code* Quarterly File: The Statement of Financial Accounting Standards (SFAS) #142 issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), pertains to how goodwill and other intangible assets are reported. SFAS 142 affects both the Balance Sheet and Income Statement. On the Balance Sheet, companies are required to present Goodwill and Other intangibles separately. On the Income Statement, companies will no longer amortize goodwill and some other intangibles that have indefinite useful lives. Instead, companies will write-down the value of Compustat North America 7/2003 Each record will contain the following information: Permanent Number (GVKEY), CUSIP, Mnemonic, Item Number, Fiscal year end month (01-12), Quarter (1,2,3,4), Data Year (YYYY), Value or Data Code* Chapter 6 – Compustat Character ASCII File Formats 2 *Note: Data Codes in the Annual and Quarterly Expanded files are positive figures; for example, the Not Available Data Code is represented by 0.0001, with a “1” in the fourth position to the right of the decimal.
