(January 9, 2012 – March 4, 2012 – 8 week class)

Course Syllabus

Textbooks and syllabus are subject to change each session.

Students are responsible for using the appropriate textbook and syllabus. Instructors may modify assignments.

Course Description

Understanding why consumers do the things they do is essential for all marketing. In this course, students will explore the many influences that affect individual purchase and consumption behavior.

The approach taken will be wide-ranging and will draw on current theory in psychology, sociology and anthropology. The practical application of consumer behavior theory to the students work and product experiences as well as to their own consumer behavior will be stressed throughout.

Course Objectives

Obtain a usable managerial understanding of consumer behavior.

Leverage consumer behavior principles to develop marketing strategy for various marketing situations.

Become a good interpreter of different types marketing data.

Understand and be able recommend marketing tools to increase the likelihood of success.

Evaluate different marketing problems and challenges and come up with an action plan that is sound with limited resources.

Improve creativity and critical thinking.

Course Requirements

Midterm and Final Case Assignments:

There will be two cases assignments from your textbook. Both cases present you with an opportunity to apply the concepts and ideas learned in this course into your paper. Both cases have a set of questions that you will need to research and answer. Each paper should no less than 5 pages and a maximum of 7 pages. You will have two weeks to complete each assignment.

Written Assignments:

There are weekly written assignments that will be a combination of internet, DDB Life Style Study

Data analysis (from the required CD), and marketing articles.

Discussion Assignments:

The discussion questions will be a direct application of the material covered that week.

Late Assignments: All assignments are to be submitted by the due date listed on the course schedule.

Late assignments and posts and will result in a loss of points. Weekly Discussion posts will only be graded if posted prior to Sunday, 11:00pm CST of the week they are due.

Each student is encouraged to ask any questions you may have regarding assignments, projects, and or miscellaneous topics in the Ask the Instructor Discussion Forum.

It is the student's responsibility to inform the instructor of any special circumstances that may have an impact on accomplishing the required assignments and discussions. The decision of any make-up work is based on the evaluation and decision of the instructor. It is in the student's best interest to plan ahead and prepare for the expectations of this course. Students are expected to interact through the

Angel course management system, at least 3-5 times each week, for discussions, announcements and assignments.

It is also discusses the tailoring of an image and presentation of a product or service that will appeal to a specific market.

Think about the profile of the consumer. Come up with a possible profile of woman who would like to purchase power tools. Then consider the information that would help come up with the image and product position specific to this group of consumers. That image could be based on the lifestyles of women who are likely to buy a power tool. The creation of a perceptional map might help you formulate your approach.

A Perceptual Map example is shown in Figure

9-10 on page 345 of the text. Also consider the relationship between brand image and your perceptual map.

The rank ordering of the database by business metrics, sales and buying behavior, frequency of purchase, etc.

Remember that companies often try to influence a desired state by demonstrating a benefit in their advertisement. For example: on page 510 of your text, Illustration 14-7 shows Invisilign advertisement that attempts to influence the hatred based on outcome or benefits

Once you have identified a site that qualifies, describe how you think they are triggering the problem recognition. It could be a packaging problem, an inconvenience problem, a service problem etc. There are many to choose from.

Your paper should be approximately 2-3 pages. You may include images (be cognizant of the file size with an image) and links.
