By: Jared Edwards Shoot, SCORE!! Buckets of sweat pouring off my face as I stand there waiting on some action. “Clear!” screams the No Excuse goalie as he launches the ball over every player and it ends up behind the goal. Their largest attackmen sprints over to scoop up the ball. As he does that he doesn’t see me coming full speed ahead. WHAM! I send the massive player soaring for yards. Still recovering from the hit, I go get the ball which was just out of stick length. Slipping and jolting, I use my speed and size to run all over their defense. “Will, get open!” I scream to our best attack. He runs down behind the crease and I fire a long pass down past the goalie right into his net. I dart right over to the open part of the field. Will launches a rocket over to me as soon as he sees me open. Right as I get the pass he runs around the crease and is open once again and a lob pass was passed over to him. A double team was ordered by the No Excuse coach on Will. That left me wide open right in front of the goal. “Will! Will! I’m open!” I exclaim to him gesturing that I have a wide open shot. Dodging around their horrible double team he shoots a rocket over to me across the field. “Shot!” Desperately screams the goalie gesturing that someone come and get me. Everyone heard him and just turned their heads. Not a single player came to get me. They were thinking; Oh no. What have we done? We let him just walk right in and he’s going to score because of our mistakes. I play with the goalies head. Moving my pole left, right, up, down. He has no clue to where the shot will be placed. His eyes were like a fly, big and trying to look in every direction possible, waiting for the shot to come. Finally, I rip the shot straight past the goalies defenses. 11-1 is the score after the goal. Every one of the defenders for the No Excuse team was on the ground or getting yelled at by the coach. By: Jared Edwards “Why didn’t you get him!? You let him just waltz straight through and play with our goalie like a dogs chew toy! Next time you will be on the bench for the rest of the game! Do you understand me?” My coach on the other hand, was jumping for joy because we had scored the most goals in the team’s history. He took me out for the rest of the game though. That happened to be the only tournament that we had a winning record. Our overall record was 5-15, the worst record in the coach’s books. The team had very little experience together but we had never played as a group. That season is the best season of my life so far, even though we lost. I was the leading goal scorer with 17 goals and MVP. I will definitely play with that coach again.
