Subject: Introduction to Digital Language Teaching Name: Jenny Student Number: M0032002 Design Document Introduction This is a CALL listening program for learners who want to pass the TOEIC listening tests. The purpose of this program is to improve learners’ TOEIC listening comprehension. The pedagogical approach is the audiolingual method. This CALL program is basically a process of mechanical habit formation. By listening to short conversations and short talks and performing pattern drills, the chances of producing mistakes are minimized. Drills enable learners to choose the correct answers. The language teaching methodologists who developed audiolingualism had a convincing and powerful theory of language to draw upon—known as behavioral psychology. “There are three crucial elements in learning: a stimulus, which serves to elicit behavior; a response triggered by a stimulus; and reinforcement, which serves to mark the response as being appropriate and encourages the repetition of the response in the future.”(Richards & Rodgers, 2003, p.56) Language mastery is represented as acquiring a set of appropriate language stimulus-response chains. As a result, this CALL program can help learners enhance their TOEIC listening abilities based on the audiolingual method. This CALL program will be built by ViewletBuilder version 6 Enterprise. Every student is required to have his or her own personal computer or notebook which can run the Windows XP operating system. Every learner has to have Internet capabilities on his or her personal computer or notebook. The People In this CALL program, the subject specialist will provide the appropriate content and pedagogical input. There will also be an author who knows how to use ViewletBuilder to build this program, a graphic designer to create TOEIC listening comprehension pictures for this listening program, a sound technician to produce audio of the listening practice questions, and an instructional designer to build the CALL program to interact with the learners. Each lesson will contain audio files followed by repetition drills. The interactive CALL program can help the learners to improve their listening comprehension through drills and practice. Detailed Information This listening CALL program is designed for the students who want to pass the TOEIC tests. If the students passed the GEPT intermediate level, they would be easier for them to practice the CALL program. Students who pass this level can use basic English to communicate about topics in daily life. If the students haven’t passed the GEPT intermediate level, they would still be able to use the CALL program. It will take them more time to master the program. Teachers, who want to teach TOEIC or want to help students pass TOEIC tests, will use this program. It can be used during a listening class. The TOEIC listening test contains four parts. They are photographs, question-response, short conversations, and short talks. For example, students can listen to the short conversations or the short talks together. After listening to the short conversations or the short talks, students have to identify the main ideas and find the detailed information in the short conversations and the short talks. Students can practice the CALL program until they are able to master each test question. It can also be used at home as an extra work. This CALL program permits each student to proceed at his own rate. The most important thing is that this program can improve listening comprehension and create a happy and fun environment to attract learners and guide them to enjoy listening activities. Objectives After students finish the CALL program, they should be able to do the following: A. Get 785 on their TOEIC test. B. Indicate the cause and effect relationships in a 2-minute short conversation by choosing an appropriate answer with 80 percent accuracy. C. Identify the main idea in a 3-minute short conversation by choosing an appropriate answer with 80 percent accuracy. D. Recognize supporting details in a 3-minute short conversation by choosing an appropriate answer with 80 percent accuracy. E. Identify the cause and effect relationships in a 3-minute short talk by choosing an appropriate answer with 80 percent accuracy. F. Identify comparisons and contrasts in a 3-minute short talk by choosing an appropriate answer with 80 percent accuracy. G. Recognize cohesive devices showing cause and effect, comparison and contrast, and persuasion. Design of the CALL Program Introduction slide Learners will see “TOEIC Secret Garden” on the introduction slide. This is a listening exercise for learners who want to pass TOEIC tests. Learners will see a “Click to start” button. They can click “Click to start” to start the program. Listening slide When learners use the listening CALL program, they can see pictures on the slide. There are two buttons on the listening slide. Learners can see the “Click to listen” button and “Next” button. When clicking the “click to listen” button, learners can listen to the short conversations or the short talks. Clicking the “Next” button will move to exercise slide. Every listening slide has pictures and two buttons. Exercise slide After the listening slide, click the “Next” button to move to the exercise slide. There are three questions about the listening. Each question is on a different slide. Those questions are multiple choice questions and test for listening comprehension. Learners have two chances to answer each question. If they still have the wrong answer the second time, they have to listen to the short conversations or the short talks again. Final slide After the exercise questions, the end slide will show “Congratulations” and applaud the learners. There are two buttons on this slide: one is “Listen to it again” button for going back to the listening slide; the other one is the “Finish” button for finishing the listening practice and closing the program. Testing This program must be tested before giving it to the students. Testing should run the whole program and check every single function on every slide. The program should be run in Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. Perhaps, the program will have some technical problems, such as no sound, the button doesn’t work, and so on. The content of program must be checked because sometimes typing errors may occur. If the students haven’t passed the GEPT intermediate level, teachers would have to teach them the intermediate level word lists which are on the GEPT official website first. If the students passed the GEPT intermediate level, they would practice this CALL program at home on their own. Conclusion I hope this program can help students to improve their TOEIC listening abilities. After students practice the CALL program, I hope they can master every question and pass the TOEFL tests. As the saying goes, “Practice makes perfect.” Only by spending time on practicing the exercises in the CALL program can students get higher scores on their TOEIC tests. References Brown, J. D.
