READ THE CLASSICS You must read one classic (non-abridged) title this quarter. You may use your silent reading time and you will have to read at home as additional homework. (Turn over for during and after activities!) First Assignment: Complete the following activity during reading: Keep a question/reflection log during reading for each chapter. Use the Active Reading Strategies poster for ideas of what to write about. You must use a variety of strategies for each chapter, and you must apply all strategies multiple times by the conclusion of your book. Second Assignment: (Two Parts!) Complete the following activities after reading: A. Find and list three URL addresses of websites with topics related to your title. Do not use the title itself! Write one sentence for each site describing its focus. For example, if you read The Wizard of Oz your websites might be Frank L. Baum (the author), tornadoes, or Kansas. (Web sites that sell products related to your book or about the book itself will not be accepted.) B. Complete a one-page report on a topic related to your book from one of your chosen web sites. It takes at least two handwritten pages to equal a onepage typed report. Use font size 12, Times New Roman or Helvetica. Include a title page. Do not include the title on the report page. Third Assignment: DO ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: Compile a ten-question/answer sheet. Questions should include topics of setting, characters, problems and solutions, and at least one reflective question. Answer all of your questions in complete sentences, including the reflective question. OR Create a poster. Include title, author, setting: time and place, characters: major and minor, and at least one major event: problem with solution. You may use images from the Internet, but this is not a cut and paste grade! You must write or type your own paragraphs describing the concepts above.
