Scenario-Based Training Outline
Preparation before training:
1. TaxWise (TW) - if you are planning to use TaxWise, set up appropriate amount of users
beforehand. Use TW login instructions on EKS website for your volunteers to follow.
2. Review the following:
a. PowerPoints (PPT) for the scenarios you plan to cover. These PPT’s will act as a prompt
for you during the day, taking you from one topic to the next, mirroring the lesson plans.
b. The Lesson Plans for the scenarios you plan to cover. The lesson plans are the nuts and
bolts to the substance of the training. You will use the PPT and the lesson plans
simultaneously.
c. Reference materials- ensure you know where to find information that you are teaching
in the 4012, etc.
3. Volunteer packets- make sure you have enough copies of the 13614-C’s, scenario tax documents
and interview notes for your volunteers each to have their own.
4. Each student should also have a copy of the 1040 if not using Tab K in the 4012 along with the
1040 Formula Worksheet – per scenario per student.
5. Training kits (Publication 4480) - all volunteers will need one throughout the training
Keys to making this training successful:
1. Demonstrate everything in TaxWise for your class. Assume they know nothing.
2. Use the 4012 as your reference to tax law topics. This is your go-to material and the
volunteers need to understand its importance.
