Job Description – Chef de Mission (Volunteer) Team Ontario at 2017 Canada Summer Games Winnipeg, Manitoba – July 28th – August 13th The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport is seeking an experienced volunteer to lead Team Ontario’s participation in the 2017 Canada Summer Games. As the Chef de Mission you will form the Core leadership team and Mission Staff that will be responsible for supporting Ontario’s coaches, managers and athletes to ensure they have an experience of a lifetime at Canada’s premier multi-sport event. The 2017 Canada Summer Games will be held July 28 – August 13 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Canada Games are a national multi-sport competition with participation from every province and territory in Canada. The amateur athletes that participate in the Games are some of each province and territory’s finest. The Chef de Mission will work over the next two years to ensure that all aspects of Team Ontario’s preparation are in place for a successful Games. This is an opportunity to play a lead role in Ontario’s sport development system. The successful candidate will be an effective leader that builds a strong team where athletes and coaches can focus on their competition. Term: The position will begin from the time of selection to the completion of all post Games responsibilities. The Chef de Mission must be available for up to 21 days at the time of the Games as well as two Chef de Mission pre-Games meetings in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Note: Pending a standard post-games performance review, there is an opportunity for the Chef de Mission of the 2017 Canada Summer Games to be offered the Chef de Mission position for the 2021 Canada Summer Games. Responsibilities: Pre-Games: Lead the selection of the Core Leadership team, Responsible for the Mission Staff application and selection process, Attend all meetings and functions related to the 2017 Canada Summer Games which includes but is not limited to 3 – 4 in person Team Ontario Mission meetings, one Coaches/Manager meeting and two Chef de Mission meetings in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Develop Team Ontario budget and workplan with Core Leadership team, Participate in Chef de Mission conference calls as organized by the Host Society, Facilitate all Team Ontario Mission Staff meetings and conference calls, Serve as spokesperson on all Team Ontario related activities and events, Develop a clear understanding of all Team Ontario and Canada Games Council policies, procedures and documents. Lead the development of any new Team Ontario policies required. Attend team training camps and meetings leading up to the Games, Ensure effective working relationships with key stakeholders and partners including the Ministry, Mission Staff, Canada Games Council, Host Society, Provincial and Multi-Sport Organizations and other Provincial and Territorial teams, Support Mission Staff to identify and resolve any issues related to their assigned sports or portfolios, Ensure all activities outlined in the workplan are completed in a timely and effective manner to ensure a successful Games, Report directly to the Manager, Games Program at the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport on a regular basis. Games Time: Attend daily Chef de Mission meetings, Coordinate and facilitate daily Team Ontario Mission Staff meetings providing necessary updates and important information, Ensure effective and efficient working relationships between Mission Staff and Coaches/Managers which will provide an optimal competition environment, Ensure Mission Staff are fulfilling their responsibilities with assigned sports and under their Core team portfolio, Support Mission Staff to manage any emergency situations as they arise, Serve as spokesperson for Team Ontario with media and at all functions/meetings, Oversee all Team Ontario disciplinary procedures and issues as required, Oversee all non-field of play protests as they arise, Ensure support is provided for any sport specific protests as required, Provide support to Team Ontario by attending competitions for all sports and all recognition events organized, Ensure all Team Ontario policies and procedures are followed, Provide regular reports to the Ministry on activities, situations and status of Team Ontario at the Games. Post Games: Conduct post Games Core Team and Mission Staff debrief meeting, Manage post Games evaluations for team members, Provincial and Multi-Sport Organizations and Mission Staff, Compile a final report with Core Leadership Team for submission to the Ministry, Attend Canada Games Council post Games Chef de Mission debrief meeting. Qualifications: Thorough knowledge of multi-sport Games at a provincial, national and/or international level, Knowledge of the Canada Games Council and an understanding of the role Canada Games plays in developing athletes in Ontario’s sport system, Demonstrated leader in the sport sector, Ability to create a positive team environment that ensures a successful Games, Strong interpersonal and written/verbal communications skills, Demonstrated ability to develop strong relationships and partnerships with key partners/stakeholders, Varied and extensive experience as a volunteer with a strong commitment to the Games, Strong spokesperson with experience in speaking to media, Ability to communicate in both official languages is an asset. NOTE: Successful candidate must complete Police Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening prior to starting in their role as Chef de Mission for Team Ontario.
