This consideration provides students with an opportunity to submit an additional application, after the choice deadline, to two arts areas at the newly expanded Arts Programs at Boynton Beach Community High School. Additional applications are only accepted for Boynton Beach Community High School and choice options including other schools or programs will not be considered. Admissions: Students who auditioned for A. W. Dreyfoos Jr. School of the Arts and were eligible for the program are given priority seating and do not need to re-audition. However, an application does need to be submitted. Students who previously auditioned for A.W. Dreyfoos Jr. School of the Arts but did not meet the audition requirements are encouraged to re-audition for Boynton Beach Community High School. Students currently in a wait pool for another program and/or school will not be withdrawn from the wait pool unless the student accepts an offered seat at Boynton Beach Community High School. Page | 4 The School District of Palm Beach County Choice and Career Options & Boynton Beach Community High School Admission Requirements 2013-2014 Students and their parent/legal guardian must be a legal resident of Palm Beach County at the time of registration and be entering 9th or 10th grade. Passing audition scores and a GPA of 2.0 or above is required for admittance to the program. Audition details for each program are outlined below. Qualifying Scores Scores are averaged from three adjudicators and range from 1 to 5. 9th Grade 4.25 or higher th 10 Grade 4.50 or higher Accommodations to the audition process are permissible for students with special needs that are documented in an active IEP or 504 plan. Students will be required to bring their active IEP or 504 plan to the audition in order to receive accommodations. Students with native languages other than English are encouraged to audition in their native language. Students will be provided language facilitators for their auditions, if they are identified as LY with their current school. Following the audition period, students who qualify for the program of their choice and who meet the GPA requirements will be submitted for a random lottery selection process, should the number of students exceed the number of available seats. Parents/guardians and students will be notified of their placement no later than Wednesday, June 11, 2014. Page | 5 The School District of Palm Beach County Choice and Career Options & Boynton Beach Community High School Admission Process Step 1: Applications Submit a Choice Application to the Department of Choice and Career Options by the deadline: June 4, 2014 Applications are available online at www.palmbeachschools.org/choiceprograms. Applications may be submitted in one of four ways: Fax: (561) 434-7300 Emailed as a PDF attachment to nicole.ketchem@palmbeachschools.org Submitted in person to the Choice and Career Options Office Mailed to: Choice and Career Options 3300 Forest Hill Blvd., Suite C-124 West Palm Beach, FL 33460 Step 2: Prepare Several program areas require students to audition with pre-prepared materials or provide musical arrangements or supplies. Please refer to the section below on Audition Guidelines. Step 3: Schedule Audition Parents/guardians will be notified via phone of their student’s audition dates and times. Auditions will be available May 31, 2014 and June 7, 2014. Applicants must audition on the date they are assigned. Audition dates may be re-scheduled with documented, immediate family emergencies, if the date conflicts with a religious observation date, or with a doctor’s note that falls on the date of, or up to three days prior to the student’s audition. Students with a verified illness will be rescheduled if there are available slots available on an existing audition date. Students who have not auditioned by the date of the choice lottery selection process on June 10, 2014 will not be eligible for selection. If a student auditions and qualifies after the initial lottery process, acceptance will be based on space availability. Should all seats be filled with the initial lottery process, students will be placed in a wait pool. Please arrive 30 minutes early in order to check in and report to your assigned area. The audition process will require that applicants be present and ready to perform at any point during the four hour audition time block. Step 5: Respond to your lottery status The lottery for Boynton Beach Community High School’s various arts programs will be conducted on June 10, 2014. Student assignments will not be given over the phone. Students will receive their offer of assignment via mail to the address listed on their application. This change will not be reflected on your online account. Parents or guardians will need to accept or decline their seat by providing a written notice of acceptance or seat decline to the Office of Choice and Career Options or Boynton Beach Community High School. Written notice may be submitted in person, by fax, emailed, or mailed to the addresses provided in the “applications process” section. Only after a student has accepted his or her seat in the arts program at Boynton Beach Community High School will his or her account change to reflect this assignment. Copies of audition scores will be available after June 11, 2014. Boynton Beach Community High School will hold campus tours and faculty greeting on May 29, 2014 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Who can apply? Any student who legally resides in Palm Beach County with their parent or legal guardian, at the time of registration, and who is entering 9th or 10th grade may apply. I already submitted a choice application for two programs that are not at Boynton Beach Community High School. May I still apply to the arts program at this school? Yes. For the 2014-2015 school year, considerations are being made to facilitate the expansion of Boynton Beach Community High School to a school of the arts. This consideration provides students with an opportunity to submit an additional application, after the choice deadline, to two arts areas at the newly expanded arts school at Boynton Beach Community High School. Can I audition for more than one art area? Yes, however this will require you to attend auditions on two separate days. What if I get sick on my audition date? Auditions will only be rescheduled with a doctor’s note if there are audition slots available on another date. Doctors notes must be dated the day of the audition or up to three days prior to the audition. Is transportation provided for students who attend Boynton Beach Community High School? AP, AICE, and Dual Enrollment course work is provided for students who wish to excel in both arts and academics. Over the course of four years, students will be exposed to ballet, jazz, tap, modern, and hip hop. Unique to Boynton Beach Community High School is the Boys Dance Academy which encourages boys to train in dance techniques that are unique to male choreographers and performers. Audition Guidelines: Applicants must wear clothing appropriate for a dance class. Solid colored t-shirts, shorts, and socks may be worn if the applicant does not have dance attire (leotards, tights, and ballet shoes). Baggy clothing and jewelry are not permitted. Hair must be neatly secured away from the face. 1. Applicant will participate in a dance class incorporating ballet and modern. Evaluation will be based on: Physical characteristics (body alignment, strength, endurance, and flexibility) Coordination and movement (ability to move two or more body parts at the same time and/or sequentially in a demonstrated movement pattern) Ability to take direction (ability to learn quickly with little or no repetition of instruction and willingness to accept and apply corrections) Potential (overall performing ability) Precision and accuracy 2. Applicant will perform a prepared ballet, modern, jazz, tap, or hip-hop solo no longer than one (1) minute in length. Applicant will bring his/her music on a compact disc or media player (iPod) cued to the beginning of the selection. No costumes, accessories, or props are permitted. Evaluation will be based on: Sense of rhythm, ease of movement Use of dance elements Overall performance ability Page | 10 The School District of Palm Beach County Choice and Career Options & Boynton Beach Community High School Digital Media The Digital Media program at Boynton Beach High School encompasses multiple facets of technology based art. Coursework includes digital photography, digital media/multimedia foundations, introduction to information technology, and digital design. Students will be exposed to program techniques such as elements of design that lead to careers as multimedia artists and graphic designers. Audition Guidelines: 1. Storyboard: Applicant will select five (5) images from an image bank of 100 black and white photographs. The applicant will arrange their selected images to create a 5-image storyboard sequence. The applicant will then write text to accompany each of the five images to convey a single story. The applicant will have 40 minutes to complete and assemble the storyboard. The school will provide all materials. No outside materials or equipment will be allowed. Evaluation will be based on: Organization of time and materials and the ability to follow instructions Demonstrated ability to choose images to tell a story Ambition, imagination, concept, complexity, and creativity Demonstrated ability to analyze and write text, which illustrates the connection between image and idea Demonstrated ability to interpret the meaning of the photograph and place in the storyboard 2. Digital Photography: Applicant will have the opportunity to take photographs on campus for 20 minutes using a digital camera provided by the school and will be instructed to record 30 or more images using the list of elements and principles as a point of departure. The applicants will be asked to choose no more than three (3) of the elements and/or principles as their focus. Applicants will edit the images to the ten (10) best and save them to a CD that is provided. Their CD will include their applicant number and the elements and/or principles they focus on. The applicant will have 40 minutes to edit and burn the CD for a total of 60 minutes. The school will provide the camera, SD memory card, and CD. No outside materials or equipment will be allowed. Evaluation will be based on: Organization of time, materials, and demonstrated ability to follow instructions Ambition, imagination, concept, complexity, and creativity Composition: image orientation, focal point and spatial relationships demonstrated in the selected images Technique: exposure, contrast, saturation, and local color/black and white/sepia Page | 11 The School District of Palm Beach County Choice and Career Options & Boynton Beach Community High School Integrity of the photographs, which is the ability to relate the images to the chosen theme 3. Applicant Essay- Applicant will have 15 minutes to respond to the questions below in writing based on the interpretation the Digital Media is the study of: photography, film, graphic design, animation, and multimedia. Please answer the following in six (6) sentences or less: Why do you want to study Digital Media at Boynton Beach Community High School? How do you currently use Digital Media as a creative outlet? What are your long-term goals relating to the exploration of Digital Media? Students will perform at multiple venues and for different events, producing a well-rounded musician who is able to appropriately respond the to the demands of multiple venues. 1. Applicant will perform a prepared solo chosen from the state music list of standard music literature. Go to www.flmusiced.org/fba for a listing. The chosen solo piece should showcase the student’s technical ability at the highest level with which the applicant is comfortable. Evaluation will be based on: Pitch accuracy (discrimination and partials) Rhythmic accuracy (timing, tempos, actual written rhythm) Tone quality (characteristic for instrument) Technique (breath control, fluency, fingering, entrances, releases, tempos, articulation) Expressiveness (dynamics, phrasing, tempo, shaping) Musical Effect (artistry, stage presence, appearance, emotion) 2. Applicant will prepare six (6) major scales in the keys of F, Bb, Eb, Ab, A and G. The judges will ask the student to perform 3 of the 6, selected at random. Evaluation will be based on: Accurate performance of each scale asked to perform 3. Applicant will sight-read several measures after 30 seconds of visual study. Evaluation will be based on: Accurate performance of each measure 4. Applicant will sing a familiar song (e.g. “Happy Birthday.”) Evaluation will be based on: Accuracy (pitch, rhythm, and timing) 5. Applicant will sing a series of notes played on the piano in real time. Evaluation will be based on: Demonstrated motivation through description of practice habits, lessons, festival participation, awards, eagerness to learn and try new concepts *NOTE: Boynton Beach Community High School does NOT offer a guitar program nor do we offer a drum set program. However, students who play legitimate percussion are encouraged to apply. Percussionists are expected to perform and sight-read on snare drum and mallet. No timpani is required. This program encourages proficiency in Classical and Broadway. Students will also be introduced to the elements of composition. Audition Guidelines 1. Applicant will perform a prepared solo chosen from standard music literature. Students should be able to play at the ability level of, at least, but not limited to, two-part Inventions by J. S. Bach or like-level pieces. Care should be given to choose repertoire that successfully demonstrates the student’s technical and musical stage of development. Selection must be played from memory. The student must bring one copy of the music to be performed. Evaluation will be based on: Required level of selection Technique (mechanics: hand position, wrist position, posture, fluency, fingering, use of pedal) Memorization Pitch Accuracy Rhythmic Accuracy Expressiveness (dynamics, phrasing, tempo, articulation, interpretation, style) Tone quality Musical effect (choice of music, artistry, stage presence, appearance) 2. Applicant will perform one scale (applicant’s choice) at least 2 octaves/HT (hands together) in 16th notes at a minimum of quarter note=100. Evaluation will be based on: Technique (mechanics: hand position, wrist position, posture, fluency, fingering) Tone Quality Tempo 3. Applicant will sight-read several measures after 30-60 seconds of visual study. Evaluation will be based on: Accurate performance of pitches and rhythm in each measure 4. Students will also learn musical notations, sight-singing, and develop an appreciation of many styles of music through the study and performance of vocal literature. Audition Guidelines: 1. Applicant will perform a prepared solo* chosen from standard music literature available through any middle or high school music department. The solo repertoire should showcase the student’s technical ability and well-produced tone at the highest level with which the applicant is comfortable. Selection must be memorized. A pre-recorded accompaniment CD is expected; no live accompaniment will be allowed. Evaluation will be based on: Tone quality Technique (posture, breath management, legato style) Pitch and rhythmic accuracy Intonation Diction (pure vowels, clear consonants, authentic diction) Expressiveness (dynamic, phrasing, tempo) Musical effect (6 elements: artistry, stage presence, appearance, emotion, memorization, choice of literature) 2. Applicant will sing a familiar song (e.g. “Happy Birthday”). Applicant will also sing tones back from chords played on the piano. Evaluation will be based on: Aural memory (accuracy of pitch, range accessibility) 3. Applicant will sing back a series of notes from short melodies played on the piano. Five examples of progressive difficulty will be given. Evaluation will be based on: Aural memory, accuracy and intonation 4. Page | 18 The School District of Palm Beach County Choice and Career Options & Boynton Beach Community High School Theatre The goal of the Theatre Department at Boynton Beach Community High School is to enable students to develop fundamental skills in the collaborative art of theatre. Students will explore elements of theatre involving, but not limited to, acting and characterization, movement and vocal production, pantomime and improvisation, script elements, theatre history, technical theatre and design, playwriting, theatre production and artistic discipline. Audition Guidelines: 1. Applicant will participate in a thirty minute (30) group theatre class. The class will include a movement combination and an ensemble-building improvisation exercise Evaluation will be based on: Energy, commitment, and stage presence Focus, concentration, and control Imagination, creativity, and expressiveness Retention (learning movement quickly with little or no repetition of instruction) and execution (demonstrating coordination and rhythmic accuracy) of movement 2. Applicant will present either a prepared (A) PERFOMANCE AUDITION, OR (B) TECHNICAL AUDITION. a. PERFORMANCE AUDITION- applicant will verbally present a timed, one (1) minute monologue and a song (16-32 bars) from the musical theatre repertoire (stage or film). Evaluation will be based on: Energy and emotional investment Focus, concentration, and control Clarity of storytelling (sense of discovery, communicating the meaning of the words) Specific and appropriate character choices (gesture, style) Honest and sincerity of performance Vocal quality (volume, diction, breath support, inflection) Evaluation of the song will be based on: Energy and emotional investment Hones and sincere storytelling choices (communicating meaning and character) Vocal production (pitch, intonation, rhythm, volume, diction, breath support) Page | 19 The School District of Palm Beach County Choice and Career Options & Boynton Beach Community High School b. TECHNICAL AUDITION- Applicant will give a three (3) minute presentation of an original, self-made, technical design (e.g. costume, scenic design model, toy prop, etc.) including: any research or development ideas used in formulating the project, the inspiration behind the project, how it was made, materials used, and choices made in the design and execution of the project AND: Cold Reading: the applicant will present a cold reading after sixty (60) seconds of study from a script provided by the school. The script does not have to be memorized. Evaluation will be based on: Originality and creativity Appropriateness of artistic choices Application of research and/or creative inspiration Craftsmanship and attention to detail Articulation of concepts & process Overall artistic ability Evaluation will be based on: Energy and emotional investment Hones and sincere storytelling choices (communicating meaning and character) Vocal quality (Volume, diction, breath support, inflection) 3. Applicant will be challenged to either: (A) REDIRECT- the applicant will be given a redirect (perform in a different way with a specific direction) of the prepared monologue or song, OR (B) DESIGN PROJECT EXPLORATION- the applicant will be asked to justify artistic choices and explore or solve any challenges regarding their design. Evaluation will be based on: Willingness and ability to take direction and follow instructions Success implementing the requested direction or exploration 4. Applicant will participate in an interview. Evaluation will be based on: Current/previous involvement in theatre Ability to communicate ideas and goals Potential for professional success *NOTE REGARDING PERFORMANCE AUDITIONS: Monologues must be from a contemporary (written within the last 50 years) published play. Internet monologues or original works are unacceptable. Songs require a prerecorded accompaniment (CD or iPod) of instrumental music only. If no musical theatre song is prepared, applicants will sing “Happy Birthday” to a pre-recorded accompaniment. Page | 21 The School District of Palm Beach County Choice and Career Options & Boynton Beach Community High School Visual Arts The Visual Arts Program encourages its students to explore personal visions through a variety of mediums and materials. Visual Arts students are offered four Advanced Placement courses that include work in art history, photography, painting, digital photography, three dimensional art and printmaking. Sculpture incorporates welding and installation, as well as nontraditional three-dimensional materials. The department has developed a unique, hands-on architecture program, Painting and drawing classes provide the opportunity to work from live models. Each student is required to keep a well-developed sketchbook for research, planning and investigation. Audition Guidelines: 1. Applicant will participate in a 30-minute, timed FIGURE DRAWING class that will focus on drawing the human figure from a model using materials (compressed charcoal, erasers and newsprint paper) provided by the school. Evaluation will be based on: ability to follow directions fluidity and movement of line ( line weight and line character) ability to capture the essence of the poses ( proportions movement and action) 2. Applicant will complete a 30-minute, timed STILL LIFE DRAWING using materials (ebony pencil, eraser, viewfinder and white drawing paper) provided by the school. Evaluation will be based on: accuracy (a demonstrated sense of proportion, value and perspective) technique (skill in the handling of materials and understanding of mark making) overall success of the drawing, (including composition, craftsmanship and time management) 3. Applicant will complete a 30-minute, timed three DIMENSIONAL DESIGN based on a word/idea/comcept given to the student at the time of the audition using materials (colored paper, scissors, tape and glue) provided by the school.
