1920-Pancho villa retires.
• Pancho villa was a Mexican leader who advocated for the poor and wanted agrarian reform.
• Even though he was a killer, bandit, and a revolutionary leader, many remember him as a folk hero.

• Pancho villa is also known as
Doreto Arango.
• Pancho villa was also responsible for a raid on
Columbus, New Mexico, in 1916, which was the first attack on
U.S soil since 1812.

• Pancho villa was one of the most prominent revolutionary generals!
• Pancho villa was born on June
5 th , 1878 and he died on July 20,
1923, he was 45 when he died.

1921-Tomb of the
Unknown Soldier.
• The tomb is guarded 24 hours a day seven days a week.
• There has been a guard on duty ever since 1937.
• A guard will regularly spend 5 hours getting their uniform ready for duty.

• Guard can choose to stay on duty during severe weather such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and bad thunder storms.
• Because of today’s technology and DNA testing, it is said there will probably not be any additions to the tomb.

1922-Insulin discovered
• Insulin was discovered by Dr.
Fredrick Banting.
• Insulin is a hormone produced in the body.
• Banting first tested his new theory to cure cancer on dogs.

• He would remove the pancreas from the dog and then the dog would show signs of diabetes then he would inject the insulin into the dogs bloodstream and the dogs symptoms would be cured.

• The first human test with insulin was tested on 14 year old Leonard
Thompson.
• Dr. Fredrick Banting found out that insulin does not cure diabetes but it helps slow down the symptoms.
• Leonard Thompson died fourteen years later.

1923-Earthquake in
Japan.
• On September 1 st , 1923 an earthquake hit Tokyo and
Yokohama, Japan.
• The death rate was about
100,00, and there was about
40,000 people missing.

• During this earthquake there was also a 55ft tsunami.
• This was the biggest earthquake that ever hit Japan at the time.
• The record for the biggest earthquake to hit Japan was beat on March 11, 2011.

1924-Hubble space telescope .
• Edwin P. Hubble is the man who the Hubble telescope is named after.
• The telescope takes pictures of outer space and send them back down to earth.
• The Hubble Telescope was brought into space in 1990.

• Edwin P. Hubble also has a crater on the moon named after him.
• He died on September 28 th ,
1953.
• He died of a blood clot in his brain.

1925-Tri-State Tornado
• On March 18 th , 1925 a tornado hit Missouri, Illinois, and
Indiana.
• The death toll was about 700.
• The tornado lasted three and a half hours stretching over the three states.

• The wind speeds were up to 300 mph.
• The tornado destroyed over 164 square miles.
• The tornado went through 14 counties.

1926-Richard E. Byrd
• Richard E. Byrd was a famous aviator.
• His first flight was on January
15, 1929.
• His most famous expedition was the flight over the south pole.

• The flight lasted 15 and a half hours.
• While doing an expedition he discovered an island.
• Byrd also wrote several books, his three most famous books are, Skyward, Little America, and Alone.

• The last time Byrd flew was in
1956.
• Byrd died March 11 th , 1957.
• He died of a heart ailment.

1927-Home Run Record
• In 1927 Babe Ruth made a record of the most homeruns in a single season.
• Babe Ruth was also known as the “home run king.”
• Babe was one of the best baseball players of all time.

• Babe’s home run record was a total of 60 homeruns in a single season.
• Babe was also the highest paid baseball player.

• The last game he ever played was on March 30 th , 1935.
• Babe was diagnosed with cancer in 1947.
• He died on August 16 th , 1948 because of cancer.

1928-Bubble Gum
• Walter E. Deimer invented bubble gum.
• Bubble gum was invented in 1928.
• The regular gum color was pink.
• The most popular five flavors were, watermelon, mint, strawberry, cherry, and peppermint.

• Deimer said it was an accident, and that he was trying to make something else.
• His gum was so successful that it sold over 1.5 million dollars in the first year.
• The gum only sold for a penny a piece.

1929-Stock Market
Crash.
• On October 24 th , 1929 stock prices plummeted.
• 12.9 million shares were sold on black Thursday.
• The crash continued until
November 23 rd , 1929.

• Over 100,000 people committed suicide because they lost all of there money.
• It is said that the stock market crash started the great depression.
