TSC Policies/Procedures/Expectations Tutor Contract 1. Policies: As an employee of the Tutoring & Study Center (TSC), it is expected that you maintain an overall minimum GPA of 3.0 and that your most recent semester GPA must be 3.0 or better. You must have earned a “B+” or better in the course(s) you wish to tutor. After submitting your application, an interview may be scheduled based on need for tutors in your subject areas. After a successful interview, you must also obtain the appropriate signature(s) of approval to tutor from the appropriate course department chairs and/or instructors. If you did not attend SU as an undergraduate, you must submit a transcript to the TSC in addition to getting approval from the department chair and/or instructor. 2. Procedures: Before you begin tutoring, you must attend the TSC Orientation, to review policies, procedures, and expectations. During the first year of tutoring you must complete 10 hours of Tutor Training. After the orientation, we will place you on the TSC list of active tutors and you will input your availability on the online scheduler. Every semester we initiate Level I CRLA-certified tutor training. You must complete this training within your first year. 3. Expectations: a) You must update your schedule of availability on a regular basis or you will not receive appointments. b) You need to check your electronic schedule every evening after 11pm or in the early morning to be sure of any new or canceled appointments. c) Once a tutee is assigned to you by the TSC, you enter into a contract. You may not provide tutorial services to any TSC assigned student outside the provision of this contract for the current academic year. d) All sessions should occur in a safe and public environment (e.g., TSC study rooms, Bird Library, Carnegie reading room, lounge area). e) University policies and personal liability issues prohibit tutors providing transportation to students. f) Sessions should last no more than 2 hours. A mandatory 1/4 hour break is required after 2 hours. Remember that most people cannot focus intently for more than one hour. g) As a tutor for the TSC, it is expected that you serve as a support person for students. However, it is inappropriate for any student to expect you to assist him/her with his/her entire homework assignment or project/test preparation. h) If you need to cancel a session, you must do so by 11pm the night before the session. i) If a student does not show up on time for a scheduled appointment, we ask that you wait 20 minutes. A timesheet that indicates that the student is a “no show” can be submitted. Include the student’s name and the course number and date of missed appointment on the timesheet. >> See other side j) It is necessary to completely fill out each timesheet online immediately following your session. The pay week closes on Wednesdays at 5pm. In order to be paid in a timely manner, please submit your sheets by then. j) You are not required to tutor during finals. If you choose to do so, you may. l) You are expected to conduct your tutoring sessions in a professional manner. As a employee of the TSC, you are expected to know, understand, and apply the guidelines of Syracuse University’s Academic Integrity Policy, [http://academicintegrity.syr.edu]; The Code of Student Conduct [http://supolicies.syr. edu/studs/std_code_conduct.htm]; and all University policies and regulations that govern student and employee professional practices and relationships. You will find these regulations on the websites noted, in the Graduate and Undergraduate catalogues, in the University’s Academic Rules and Regulations [http:// coursecatalog.syr.edu/rules.aspx]; and in the University’s Student Handbook. Failure to comply with these policies and regulations is grounds for immediate dismissal from your position as a tutor for TSC and a recommendation will be made to Student Employment that other University offices not hire you. I have read and I understand the policies stated above. I have received a copy of this document for my own records. ________________________________________________________________ Signature of Tutor Date ________________________________________________________________ Printed Name of Tutor Date G: TSC/Forms/tutor contract
