Out of great love for their children, parents pass on their own beliefs and religious traditions by bringing them to church for baptism. Through the family, supported by the parish and its community, faith is passed on from generation to generation. That is why the Church refers to the family as the “domestic church.” Other faith traditions have their own practices for initiating their children into the faith. As we go through the course, you will learn how other religions initiate and pass on their faith to their children. Read Laura’s personal recollection on page 31 of the Student Book. Identify ways in which Laura’s family guided her in the development of her faith. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ 1. Using a computer, access the page https://todaysmeet.com/WorldReligions 2. In the blue box, Type in your name. This will be your name for the chat – please use your real name – not a handle. 3. Read and think about the following questions about your faith. It is alright if you are not a Catholic. The objective of this task is to share your story with learning partners and collaborate with them. Please choose 3 of the 6 questions below to blog about. You will then compare your experiences with other students in the class. a) What faith tradition do you belong to? b) Why, when, and how did you become a member of your faith? c) What were some of the things you did together as a family that helped you to understand and grow in your faith? d) What is your favourite memory of participating in a religious ritual? e) In what way(s) is your faith important to you? f) Which teachings of the faith are the most important in your life? Explain. 4. On Todays Meet, please post your answers to the questions. 5. As the posts are coming in, read some of our class’s experiences. You must do a reply to one post, which will contain a compare/contrast thought. Format/word your response post like this: John or Jane: "Based on your experience, one similarity we share is......" (then finish the thought) "One difference between the our two experience is......" (then finish the thought) 6. When you are finished, complete the journal on the next page. Journal #1: Reflection Journal (Re-)read Laura’s personal recollection on page 31 which may be a reflection on her own faith journey. One way that many people reflect is by using a journal to write down their ideas and feelings about life experiences. Please respond to the following questions: “In what way is your faith the foundation of what you do? What experiences have you had with your family that have strengthened a sense of community, hospitality, and outreach to others?” ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ Brainstorm a list of key moments in the life of Jesus. /10 Jesus Use think pair share to reflect on the following questions: /10 i. In your own words, what does the term “incarnation” mean? ii. Why is the belief in Jesus as the Son of God so important to Catholics? iii. Why would God desire to become one of us? iv. On what do Catholics base the belief that Jesus is the “God-made-man” who came to live among us? Your Thoughts Other Thoughts Images of Jesus Through scripture analysis, explore the conflicting images of Jesus that existed during his ministry and the development of the image of Jesus as the incarnation of God and the second person of the Trinity. During the years of his ministry, Jesus was often in conflict with the Jewish leadership because of his teachings. Not everyone knew Jesus as his disciples knew him. In fact, even the disciples did not always understand the teachings of Jesus. In groups, read the following Gospel passages and prepares to describe the image of Jesus that is held by the main protagonist(s) in the story. How are the images similar? How are they different? b. How would you explain the differences between the images? c. Which of the images are you most attracted to? Why? d. What do these images of Jesus tell us about how Catholics around the world understand what is meant by the incarnation of God? e. If you were to create an image of Jesus that reflected your nationality or culture and at the same time reflected Jesus as a member of the Trinity, what would your image include? Explain. Your Thoughts Other Thoughts Brainstorming – (STB page 37) 10 Brainstorm a list of rituals or rites of passage that they have participated in or heard about from friends and family. Rites of Passage Similarities & Differences between Catholic Rituals Using the information found on pages 39, complete the chart comparing all the Catholic Sacraments. Sacrament information can be found on pages 41-45. They are believed to have begun long ago, sometimes at the dawn of human memory. Baptism Eucharist Reconciliation They follow set rubrics (rules of conduct of a ritual) that change very little over time. They have clear beginnings and ends. They do not seem to have practical results in the world. They say something about the individuals who participate in them. They say something about who we are as human beings, about our Earth, about time, about the holy, about God or other sacred beings. Confirmation Marriage Holy Orders Anointing of the Sick Catholic Liturgical Calendar Did you know that the Catholic Church has a calendar of its own? It is called a liturgical calendar. Mother Church uses specific colors to mark the various times, or liturgical seasons, of the year. Each season celebrates specific holy days and has special details about it that make it distinct from the other seasons. The wheel below illustrates the months of the year along with spaces for the liturgical season or seasons that are celebrated within them. Color in the blank spaces on the wheel to match the liturgical year. You may use the example found on Page 47 in your text. Advent = purple Christmas = white OrdinaryTime= green Lent = purple Easter = white Bonus: What is the significance of each of the colors? Green: _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Purple: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ White: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Journal #3: Reflection Journal Based on the way you spend your time, what is your main focus in life? What preoccupies you the most? How much time do you spend on your relationship with God? How might what you find most important be used to strengthen your relationship with God?” The Origin of the Catholic Creed The belief statements or pledges of the Apostles’ Creed have their origins in scripture. The excerpts below have been selected for the purpose of highlighting the connection between the summary statements of the Creed and the whole of the scriptures. Identify the sections of the Apostles’ Creed from the Scripture passage. Scripture Passage Statement of the Creed i. Deuteronomy 6:4, Isaiah 45:22, Genesis 1:1 ii. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty, from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Chapter 1 and 2 Chapter Task: Please choose ONE! 1. Writing: Analysis and Application of the Primary document Nostra Aetate Students will work independently to read and summarize the five chapters of Nostra Aetate and record any questions that arise as they read. Students write a reflection paper to address the following questions: What does Nostra Aetate say about the need for interreligious dialogue and about its nature? Based on this message, what is the purpose of studying world religions? How should students approach the study of world religions? 2. Create and Express: Create a Catholic Ritual Students create a Catholic ritual to celebrate Family Day. Students will need to incorporate the following items: a) Prayer b) Symbols c) Songs and/or hymns d) Scripture passages. The ritual should express key ideas about the importance of family for its members, for the Catholic community, and for society. It should make a connection to central Catholic beliefs through symbols, words, and ritual actions. As part of your planning for this project, look ahead and read the information in this chapter about family life in a Catholic home (Student Book pages 63–64). 3. Create a Poster: The Sacraments Students research the various elements of the sacraments of the Church and create a poster to illustrate various aspects of ONE of the sacramental rituals. a) Read about sacraments and liturgy (Student Book pages 41–43) b) All seven of the sacraments have their roots in scripture and each sacrament links past, present, and future. The sacraments recall the life of Jesus, make his life present for us today, and point us to the future filled with hope and anticipation. baptism (the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist) Eucharist (the Last Supper) holy orders (Matthew 16:13–19) marriage (Mark 10:1–12) confirmation (Acts 2:1–12) anointing of the sick (Mark 2:1–12, 8:22–26, 10:46–52; Luke 7:11–17, 13:10–17, 18:35– 43; Matthew 9:1–8; Acts 20:28) c) Students conduct research using library resources, the Student Book, and the Internet to gather information and create a poster containing the following: • a brief statement explaining what the ritual celebrates • images of the related symbols • a quote from the related passage and words from the liturgy of the ritual • a description of how the sacrament links past, present, and future • images of the ritual being communally practised 4. Create and Express in a Brochure: A Liturgy of the Word - use the planning sheet to create a Liturgy of the Word. Once you have planned your components, create a brochure for the congregation to use to follow the liturgy. 5. Writing and Technology: A Personal Creed. Students write and share a personal creed expressing their deepest beliefs and/or commitments. Use the following questions to conduct a guided reflection: What is the one thing or one person you trust more than anything or anyone else in your life? For what reason do you believe you were born and are alive today? What relationship or responsibility do you believe you have to the Earth? What do you feel is the importance of having a caring and loving relationship with others in your life (e.g., family, friends, peers, teachers, priests)? What bond do you have with the people who live in your country or with other people on Earth and for whom do you have a sense of responsibility? What are your deepest concerns about life? What principles are you willing to stand up for? What are some of your deepest religious beliefs? Use your reflections to write a Personal Creed. Present your creed in a poster form or some other form of creative method. Try using Glogster.com
