Spanish 1 combines an oral and written approach to the Spanish language. Through DVD presentations, textbook exercises, and in-class dialog, the student learns basic vocabulary and grammar
which enables him/her to converse and understand the Spanish language on an elementary level. The culture, history and daily life in Spanish speaking countries are presented. Written homework
exercises, speaking evaluations, quizzes, and tests are required on a regular basis.
Sra. Matisak is part of the Digital Backpack program and Assessment for Learning. Students will be presented with targets for each chapter. Each target is a student-centered goal for the
individual to achieve. Learning is the focus in this class and all aspects of language learning are incorporated: listening, reading, writing, speaking and culture. We are making a diligent effort to
ensure that the grades given for our students are not inflated, but rather truly express what the kids can identify, analyze, know, produce, create, etc. in the language.
Grades are available on Progress book. Students and parents are welcome and responsible to check Progress book anytime. Averages will be calculated based on the Green Local Schools grading
scale:
A 93-100% B 85-92% C 77-84% D 70-76% F 0-69%
We will have homework each night consisting of vocabulary assignments/grammar exercises or essays. The average student will be spending approximately 20 minutes per night on Spanish for
period classes and 30 minutes per night for blocked classes. Academic practice, assignments designed to help us learn from our mistakes, will be worth 20% of the total grade. Academic
achievement, assignments designed to assess how well the student has learned the material, will be worth 80% of the total grade. Late assessments are only accepted 1 day after the assignment
was due and are only worth half credit.
The final exam is comprehensive and consists of 75-85 objective questions and a short 7 sentence written essay. In addition, there are 5-6 short answer responses and students will be required to
complete a charla or chat sometime during the 3 days before finals. This is a verbal evaluation that will consist of announced questions; and the student must be able to “chat” with the teacher in
Spanish.
When studying vocabulary with your student: The parent or partner should say the English word and make the student say and spell the Spanish word. It would be foolish to wait until the night
before the test to learn vocabulary and grammar for obvious reasons.
Please be aware:
There is no extra credit in this class. Students must complete the work when assigned. No job in the world will allow a worker not get their work done, and then offer the employee extra or
different work so that they can get paid.
Likewise, no job will put up with late work.
Students are expected to view their education as their career for now.
Supply List: pack of index cards, 3 ring binder, dividers, 2 brown bags (grocery bags) for book cover--which we will create together.

Spanish 2 is a more sophisticated extension of the oral and written approach of Spanish 1
through in-class dialog and oral presentations, and by the increased use of Spanish by both
teacher and student. More advanced grammar and vocabulary are presented on a daily
basis. The student will be doing more speaking in the language, as well as, expressing
his/her ideas in writing in the form of short answer paragraphs. Culture and history of
Spanish speaking countries continue to be presented through classroom discussions,
readings, activities, and outside resources such as films or videotapes. Written homework
exercises, quizzes, and tests are required.
At Green High School, grades are calculated in all classes based on the 80/20 Policy. As a result, a
student’s grade is divided into 2 categories: Academic Achievement and Academic Practice. After a
student has had sufficient instruction and practice on a topic, it is then reasonable to judge his/her
mastery of the information or skills in the form of academic achievement assessments. The purpose is to
evaluate how well a student has learned the material. Eighty percent of the total course grade comes
fromacademic achievement and will consist of tests (oral, written and performance), some quizzes, some
homework, writings, projects or presentations. Whenever a student learns new material he or she
goes through a time of wrestling with the material before eventually mastering the information or
skills. It is expected that a student will make some mistakes during this learning process. Work
completed during this learning period is considered academic practice. Twenty percent of the total
course grade comes fromacademic practice and will consist of some quizzes, homework, first drafts of
writing, teacher questions during instruction, some worksheets, informal observations or pre-testing.
Specifically for this class:

questions in Spanish during class. Failure to speak in Spanish or to volunteer answers in class result
in a zero for participation.
We will have homework each night consisting of vocabulary assignments/grammar exercises or

When studying vocabulary with your student: The parent or partner should say the English word &

Matisak is available from the end of the school day until 3:15.
