AMIS 3300

Spring 2016

Student Email

Hello everyone,

Let me take this opportunity to welcome you to AMIS 3300, Cost Accounting, for Spring semester, 2016.

I hope that you find this course interesting and useful towards pursuing your career opportunities.

I am sending this email to inform you about course materials that are required for the coming semester and present some acquisition options for your consideration.

You will need to acquire two items for the course:

1.

A copy of the textbook, Cost Accounting, Charles T. Horngren, Srikant M. Datar, Madhav Rajan,

Prentice –Hall, 15th edition, 2015.

2.

An access code to MyAccountingLab (MAL), which is the on-line learning support software from

Pearson (Prentice-Hall). Please note that each student must have their own access code as graded course (homework) assignments will be submitted via this system.

There are several options available towards acquiring the two items mentioned above. They are as follows:

1. A new loose-leaf version (three-hole punched, shrink-wrapped, and binder-ready) of the textbook, along with the access code, can be purchased directly from the publisher for a total price of

$117.45. This price consists of $62.45 for the access code and $55.00 for the loose-leaf text. You will have immediate e-text access to the first two chapters while waiting for your printed text to arrive in

3-4 business days. Please note that the textbook purchase is done online after purchase of the access code and MAL registration.

2. A new loose-leaf version (three-hole punched, shrink-wrapped, and binder-ready) of the textbook along with the access code can be purchased at the university bookstore for $223.85. You will have immediate access to the printed text with this option.

3. A new hardback version of the textbook along with the access code can be purchased at the

university bookstore for $325.75 total. You will have immediate access to the printed text with this option.

4. An e-text version and access code can be purchased at the university bookstore for $134.00 total.

5. An e-text version and access code can be purchased on-line at www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com for $109.95. You will have immediate access to the on-line text with this option.

6. A used hardback version of the textbook can be purchased at the university bookstore for about

$235.00. You will have immediate access to the printed text with this option. The access code will have to be purchased separately (see below).

7. A new hardback version of the textbook along with the access code can be rented at the university

bookstore for $125.00 total. You will have immediate access to the printed text with this option.

This option is effectively a sell back obligation for the student and a buy back commitment by the bookstore.

If you already have access to a copy of the text, or are interested in option (6) above, the

MyAccountingLab access code can be purchased directly from the publisher for $62.45.

Several issues, in addition to cost minimization, may influence your acquisition decision. Some of the important issues include:

1. A credit / debit card is required for on-line purchase.

2. Financial aid/scholarship students may need to purchase the materials at the university bookstore.

3. E-text format may not be attractive to everyone and no buyback is possible.

Students often inquire as to the possibility of using an earlier edition of the textbook. Please note that a new edition always contains some modified, added, and removed chapter content. My course coverage of textbook chapters will be described by page numbers for the latest (15 th ) edition. Perhaps more importantly, the assignment (homework) material changes from edition to edition. The homework assignments in the course syllabus will also be based on the 15 th edition. Any attempt to use earlier editions is entirely the student’s responsibility and the instructor provides no cross-reference support.

Detailed instructions for MyAccountingLab, including the course registration code, will be discussed during the first day of class during Spring semester.

Best regards,
