INTERNSHIP AND CURRICULAR PRACTICAL TRAINING (CPT) GUIDE
M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Engineering
Procedures for obtaining the Academic Advisor/Departmental Letter required by ISSC
Eligibility
Full-time student at ASU for the last two semesters (This is only relevant to international
students)
Good Academic Standing and Satisfactory Progress (Refer to Handbook)
iPOS, Graduate, and Cumulative GPA Requirement: 3.0
An approved iPOS reflecting CEN 584 as an integral part of plan of study
Successful completion of both CEN Core Courses (CEN 501 and CEN 502)
No Academic Integrity Violations within the last year
Procedures
1. Obtain Offer Letter from employer. International Students must follow ISSC format and obtain
an Employer Letter.
2. Affiliation Agreement – Verify with the Engineering Career Center (Centerpoint Building, Suite 107)
that there is an agreement on file with the University.
3. Fill out the “CPT Internship Request Form” and “Student Checklist” securing the required signatures
with the exception of the Program Chair. Non-Thesis students must find a Faculty Mentor that is a
current CEN Faculty Member who is endorsed to chair CEN supervisory committees. Search faculty and
view endorsements at the following website:

The internship should be an integral part of your program of study.
4. Submit Offer Letter, ISSC Employer Letter, Job Description, Job Posting, Internship Request Form, and
Student Checklist in person to the Advising Center for approval. Job Posting and/or Job Description
must state this is a graduate level internship.
Students will be notified via email when their internship request has been approved.
Allow two weeks for processing.
Important Policy Regarding the number of CEN 584 credits allowed on the iPOS
MS Thesis and Ph.D. Students
Non-Thesis Students
MS Thesis and Ph.D. students are allowed a
maximum two terms (Spring, Summer, and/or Fall)
to participate in an internship. This can be two
terms with one company or two different
companies. The iPOS should list a maximum of two
credit hours of CEN 584; one credit hour of CEN
584 listed during the term of each planned
internship.
Non-Thesis Students will be allowed to participate
in a maximum of one term (Spring, Summer, or
Fall) internship. The iPOS should list only one
credit hour of CEN 584 listed during the term of
the planned internship.

All students are required to submit a written report at the end of the term.
Required cover sheet provided.





Five Pages: Approximately 1 page per topic.
12 point font
1 inch margins
Single space
Text and graphs that are copied and pasted from company webpages, manuals, etc. should be
limited to no more than 20% of the report and should be properly cited.
The following topics should be addressed in the report.
1. Title and Summary Statement. List your job title and restate the educational objective that you
submitted on the CPT internship request form. You should also include the job duties outlined by your
employer on the ISSC employer letter.
2. Company information. Brief information about the company and the group in which you worked.
3. Background about the problem. Your write-up up should address the following questions. What is the
context of the problem on which you worked? Why did the problem need to be solved? Who would
benefit from solving the problem? Your write-up should not be in the form of question/answer. It
should be in the form of paragraphs that address the questions above.
4. Focus of the effort. How did you approach the problem? What did you have to learn to work on the
problem? What background from courses you took was useful for solving the problem? How did you go
about solving the problem? What measurements did you make? Again, your write-up should not be in
the form of question/answer. It should be paragraphs that address the questions above as appropriate.
5. Results. What were the results of the work? How was your solution used by others? Did you write any
papers? Did you write any report? Again, your write-up should not be in the form of question/answer. It
should be paragraphs that address the questions above as appropriate. For example, if you did not
write a report you do not need to say that you did not write a report. Just address the questions as
appropriate to your work.
6. Learning experience. How did the internship contribute to the learning experience? How did you apply
knowledge from courses to the internship? Did you gain any insights from the internship? What skills
did you develop as part of the internship? Again, your write-up should not be in the form of
question/answer. It should be paragraphs that address the questions above as appropriate.
7. Gather all required signatures on the CPT Cover Sheet with the exception of the Program Chair.
8. It is recommended to have the Industry Mentor sign the report before leaving the internship to assure
accuracy and to insure that no company sensitive information is compromised.
9. Submit written report to the CIDSE Advising Center, BYENG 225.
10. After submission and approval of the written report a grade of ‘Y’ will be entered on your transcript.
