Birthday Letter Your child’s birthday is a special day! To recognize students’ birthdays, I ask that parents write their child a birthday letter to be read aloud in the classroom on their birthday (or half birthday – if summer time). This is a special time for you to reflect on the love and joy that your child has given to your family. When I read aloud your letter, I get much pleasure observing your child eagerly listening to the wonderful things you wrote. Your child will be grinning from ear to ear! Here are some ideas that you can include: The Facts: Where your child was born What he/she weighed at birth Color of hair and eyes The Family: Brothers or sisters Special experiences or cultural background What makes your child a very special person Your Child: How he/she helps out around the house How he/she shows thoughtfulness Special interests/talents Anything else that you’d like to include The letter will be sent home with your child once it has been read to the class. It will be their special keepsake to cherish for years to come. Thank you in advance for your participation! Ms. DeTolla (See below sample letter) Dear _____, Can you believe it has been 9 years since you were born on a sunny, humid day in Cleveland, Ohio? You were born one month early but still weighed 6 lbs. 2 oz. To our surprise you had lots of dark hair and dark brown eyes. You were born perfectly healthy and one of the first people you met was your sister, Jane, who was not yet two years old. She loved you from the start! Both of your grandmothers were at your birth, and of course they fell in love with you too! After a couple of days we went home from the hospital and adjusted to being a family of four. Thank you for being a good sleeper and not keeping us up too much at night! Now it is nine years later and you’ve grown into a generous, compassionate young girl. It’s been so fun to see you change! You’re a special kid who thinks of others and is always kind to your sister and your friends. For example, if mom or dad is not feeling well, you always ask if we are feeling better and if you can help out. The fun you’ve had with your sister . . . so much laughter and great memories. And I can’t forget to mention your big, crazy dog, Fido. Even though he can be quite a trouble-maker, you love him unconditionally and always keep your responsibility of feeding him and even walking him from time to time. You are there to give him lots of scratches and hugs and you even let him sit on your lap even though he weighs 85 pounds! As for being a helper to your parents, you keep your clothes tidy, put them away, clear the table, unload the dishwasher and help with the dog. We appreciate your hard work. Mostly we are proud of how much you love to read, write stories and draw pictures. You get your creativity from your dad and your love of reading from your mom. Maybe you’ll be a teacher or an artist some day! Or even an author. You’ve read more by age 9 than either of us did at your age! We’re also very proud of your determination and positive attitude as a runner. Completing a 5k at age 8 is pretty darn cool. Mom and Dad are runners too, but neither of us had run that far until we were more than 35 years old! You’re a good kid, Susie. Happy Birthday! Love You! Mom and Dad
