A Quest for Carbon Neutrality through Environmental Stewardship
2010
Background Information
Point Loma Nazarene is a 90-acre Christian liberal arts university located on the cliffs of Point
Loma in San Diego, California. In 2008, PLNU had over 2,400 full time and part time students,
and over 700 staff and faculty. PLNU believes that a worshipful approach to living includes
responsible, aware practices that allow the earth and all its inhabitants to thrive. PLNU is
committed to creation care through environmental education, waste reduction, renewable
technology and conservation.
In 2007, President Bob Brower, signed the American Colleges and University President’s Climate
Commitment, publicly recognizing the need for PLNU to lead the way for Christian institutions of
Higher Education in the fight to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Intentions of the Climate Action Plan
Given the nature of changing markets, technologies and regulations, PLNU intends for this
Climate Action Plan document to be a living representation of our goals towards carbon
neutrality. PLNU will revise this document every year for the first two years. After 2012, PLNU will
review annually and revise every three years.
Purpose
The purpose of this document is to establish a target date for carbon neutrality and goals for
carbon emission reductions. A greenhouse gas inventory baseline will be established as a
reference for future year reductions.
Main Focus
In order to reduce PLNU’s greenhouse gas emissions to zero, the university will need a paradigm
shift. The university will focus first on behavior change before offsets. Once a culture shift has
been established, the university will review the need for offsets.
Clean-Air Cool Planet
The program the university used to calculate its greenhouse gas inventory is Clean-Air Cool
Planet, and is provided to the university through its partnership with the Association of the
Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and the American College and
University President’s Climate Commitment (ACUPCC).

2050 Proposed Goals and Outcomes
Academics
A paradigm shift will be a result of a sustainability-focus infused into the curriculum and the
results will have:
1. All areas of concentration cover aspects of sustainability
2. All students will take at least one sustainability related class as a graduation requirement
3. A Sustainability Studies Minor that can be a part of any major
Energy and Climate:
In 2050, PLNU’s campus will be carbon neutral. The following energy actions will occur:
1. 100% of purchased electricity will be renewable
2. All campus will use “Smart” strips and other technologies to reduce the “phantom load”
and conserve energy
Operations:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
All buildings will be sub-metered to effectively evaluate energy and water conservation
projects
Buildings will be evaluated on a yearly basis for their efficiency
All new buildings will be LEED Silver or equivalent
New energy technologies will be researched on a continual basis
All campus buildings will have a day lighting option
All necessary windows will be dual-paned or use current technology for energy savings
All computers on campus will use virtual servers
Procurement:
1.
An Environmentally Friendly Procurement Policy will be developed and will consist of
policies addressing:
a. Paper’s recycled content
b. Products made from renewable sources
c. Product’s production location
d. How products are produced
e. The energy efficiency of products purchased
f. An Energy Star rating minimum
2. All departments will purchase materials based on the Environmentally Preferable
Procurement Policy
Recycling and Waste Minimization:
1.
2.
3.
4.
All paper towels will be composted on campus
All E-waste will be first donated and then recycled
All office materials will be resourced before being recycled
Our Environmentally Friendly Procurement Policy will reflect the need to reduce waste

Transportation:
Air Travel (Study Abroad Travel and Directly Financed Outsourced Travel)
“A Global Perspective and Experience” is one of PLNU’s core values; hence, air travel represents a
large part of the university’s GHG emissions. PLNU will:
1. Select campus funded conferences based on location
2. Encourage webinars and conference calls whenever possible
3. Begin offsetting air travel in 2020
Commuting
1. Implement shuttle buses from all possible train depots to enable commuting via train
2. Provide an emergency vehicle for commuters that use alternative transportation like
biking or carpooling
3. Provide incentives for commuters that use alternative methods of commuting
4. Implement a 4 day-10 hour work week to reduce miles driven and energy costs
5. Provide incentives for commuters that purchase fuel efficient vehicles
Campus Fleet:
1.
Entire on-campus fleet will be electric
Water:
