Which means The Blue House. Frida began painting after she was severely injured in a bus accident. On September 17, 1925, Kahlo and Gomez Arias were traveling together on a bus when the vehicle collided with a streetcar. As a result of the collision, Kahlo was impaled by a steel handrail, which went into one hip and out the other side. She suffered several injuries as a result, including fractures in her spine and pelvis. http://www.biography.com/articles/Frida-Kahlo-9359496 After Frida’s accident this is what she looked like. She was put into a full body cast in order to recover. Kahlo contracted polio at age six, which left her right leg skinnier than her left. Kahlo disguised this by wearing long and colorful. It has been conjectured that she also suffered from spina bifida, a disease that effected her spine and leg development. As a girl she participated in boxing and other sports. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frida_Kahlo This is a selfportrait of Frida when she was younger. This was probably made when she was in her late teen years. After the accident, Kahlo turned her attention away from the study of medicine to begin a fulltime painting career. The accident left her in a great deal of pain while she recovered in a full body cast; she painted to occupy her time during her temporary state of immobilization. Her selfportraits became a dominant part of her life when she was immobile for three months after her accident. Kahlo once said, "I paint myself because I am often alone and I am the subject I know best." Her mother had a special easel made for her so she could paint in bed, and her father lent her his box of oil paints and some brushes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frida_Kahlo Kahlo enjoyed painting self-portraits. She loved to be her own model. This is a portrait of Kahlo. Kahlo was married to another artist by the name of Diego Rivera. The two artists met when Kahlo asked Rivera for advice on how to pursue her artistic career. The couple got married in 1929. This marriage did not last. The couple eventually separated in later years. After a few years of separation the couple remarried in 1940. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frida_Kahlo The two People in this picture are husband and wife. Kahlo (left) and Rivera (right) were married for awhile then separated then remarried. Although Frida’s work, often fantastic and sometimes gory, has been described as surrealism, she once said that she never knew she was a surrealist “until Andre Brenton came to Mexico and told me I was one.” Kahlo’s work was extraordinary to many. Some of her best paintings are of herself. Although, many did not think that she was beautiful, that did not stop her. One of her favorite things was to be her own model. http://www.pbs.org/weta/fridakahlo/life/index.html Frida Loved to be her own model. In this portrait of herself she is painted as a deer with a human head. Frida died on July 13, 1954. She had been very ill throughout the previous year and her right leg had been amputated at the knee. Despite more than 30 subsequent operations, Kahlo spent the rest of her life in constant pain, finally succumbing to related complications at age 47. Many think that Frida may have died of an overdose, that may have been accidental. Many also think that her death may not have been accidental.
