Webliography of 11th Grade Chemistry Laboratory Megan Gould In this webliography there are many sites in which there are experiments and demonstrations which could be used as part of chemistry lab for high schools. In addition sites were added which provided good information which are an aid and provide the chemical principles of the laboratories. Some sites are beneficial for teachers while others sites were added to aid the students in the laboratory. 1. Elephant toothpaste chemistry demonstration http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemistrydemonstrations/a/elephanttooth.htm Elephant toothpaste is a common reaction that many teachers perform as a demonstration in the laboratory when learning about endothermic/exothermic reactions. . This website shows the “ingredients” or chemicals which need to be used and the amounts for the reaction and gives all the steps. It is also beneficial because it gives a summary of the reaction and its scientific theories. This demonstration can be performed when students are learning about exothermic reactions. This website is beneficial in that is provides the scientific knowledge was well as the procedure to follow. 2. Chemistry of Ice Cream http://www.scienceteacherprogram.org/chemistry/seeley06.html This is a good experiment for chemistry laboratory. In addition to making ice cream which is a nice treat for students they can learn the principles of matter and the theories of endothermic and exothermic reactions. This site was posted by a teacher and she also added her worksheet that is provided to the students. This experiment prompted students to further thinking on the process that they are performing. 3. Journey to Science http://www.sciencebyjones.com/index.htm This website was created by a high school teacher in Clemson, South Carolina. It has all of his lesson plans and material for his lectures/ assignments etc. It had good information about exothermic/endothermic reactions and material from his lessons plans could be very beneficial for a student. A teacher can set up a website as this similar for there classroom and his lesson material was accurate and could be used as well for students. 4. Anytime anywhere Chemistry Experience http://www.uncwil.edu/chem/Courses/Reeves/OnLineLabs/NonScience/1ice%20cube.pdf This website for the University of Norwich Carolina, Wilmington had a document which provides a great laboratory for freshman chemistry which would be applicable to use in high school. In this lab students were asked to create an experiment and develop a reason why ice cube dissolve faster in diet soda vs. regular. It gave a procedure for students to follow but also allowed the students to experiment with other ideas relating. It also asked many questions which lead to the scientific reason for these phenomenon. It is a great experiment for students in high school. I think that it would actually more applicable for a younger group of students. 5. Galileo Thermometer http://4physics.com/phy_demo/Galileo_thermometer/galileo-thermometer-a.html This animation is a good animation which describes the principle from the ice cube experiment. In addition to helping students visually see the theory it also has good information as an aid as well. This graphic can be used with the above experiment as an aid to get students thinking. 6. Cabbage Juice- pH indicator http://www.madsci.org/experiments/archive/859332497.Ch.html This website provides an experiment in which students take cabbage juice and make an indicator solution with it. They can then test different solutions for acidity and basicity. Cabbage is a natural indicator and is pinkish with acids and green with bases. This lab can be presented when students are introduced to the acids/bases chapter and will be very entertaining to them! 7. Chemistry for Kids http://www.chem4kids.com/files/react_acidbase.html This website had a few basic and general chapters related to chemistry. This chapter covered a general overview of the basic characteristics of acid and bases. It had beneficial information that hit all the highlights and clearly described it to the students. Also it gave topics such as atoms, reactions, and biochemistry and each topic had a small quiz which reinforced the information. 8. Vision Learning Chemistry http://www.visionlearning.com/library/cat_view.php?cid=1 This website included a good amount of general knowledge for chemistry. It included a brief introduction to many topics included a good overview of acids and bases. This site would be good for students to get an introduction to the topic. 9. SAT Chemistry Prep http://www.sparknotes.com/testprep/books/sat2/chemistry/ This website is a great aid for finding an overview of all the chapters covered over the year. It had great information about all the basics . It also had a question section which will help students in the laboratory as well as preparing for examinations. 10.NYS Regents Reference Tables http://www.p12.nysed.gov/osa/reftable/home.html This site lists all the reference tables that will be give to students when taking regent examinations. This can be helpful as an aid during laboratory when completing lab writeups. Also is could be used throughout the year when. When used regularly it will aid students at the end of the year for their regent’s examination.
