Course Description: English As A Second Language (ESL) is designed to involve the
student in the acquisition and application of English Reading, Speaking, Writing, and
Listening Skills in order to become Advanced High in the English language. Expect
success!!!
2nd Six Weeks – Fiction and Drama Unit:
6.6 -- Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Fiction.
Students understand, make inferences and draw conclusions about the structure and elements of
fiction and provide evidence from text to support their understanding.

Including, but not limited to:




Make inferences related to the whole story
Make inferences related to a part of the story
Make inferences related to structure of fiction (e.g., organization, paragraphs)
Make inferences related to particular elements of fiction
 Character -actions, thoughts, and qualities/traits
 Point of view
 Setting
 Plot
Summarize fictional text in ways that maintain meaning and logical order.
Standards: TEKS: Vocabulary: Determine the meaning of grade-level academic
English words derived from Latin, Greek, or other linguistic roots and affixes; use
context (within a sentence and in larger sections of text) to determine or clarify the

meaning of unfamiliar or ambiguous words or words with novel meanings; use context
(e.g., cause and effect or compare and contrast organizational text structures) to
determine or clarify the meaning of unfamiliar or multiple meaning words; 2(B) use
context (within a sentence and in larger sections of text) to determine or clarify the
meaning of unfamiliar or ambiguous words; 2(B) use context (within a sentence and in
larger sections of text) to determine or clarify the meaning of unfamiliar or ambiguous
words or words with novel meanings;explain the meaning of foreign words and phrases

pronunciations, alternate word choices, and parts of speech of words. explain how
authors create meaning through stylistic elements and figurative language emphasizing
the use of personification, hyperbole, and refrains.

Methods of Instruction: Students will be engaged in the learning process by:




Group lectures and discussions
Small group activities
Individualized instruction
Hands-on activities
Course Expectations:
 Attendance is necessary to keep up with the class. If a student misses class time,
they are missing the instruction time needed to learn a skill. However, if a student
must miss class, they are required to make up missed work in a timely manner (1
day for each excused day missed, after which deductions will be made for late
work). It is the student’s responsibility to retrieve their missed assignments from
the instructor.
 Students are expected to be in their seat when the tardy bell rings. If not, they will
be counted tardy.
 No eating, chewing, or drinking is allowed without Mrs. Walton's approval.
 No electronic devices are permitted without Mrs. Walton's approval. If I see it out
for ANY reason, it will be confiscated.
 Students are required to participate in class and be respectful to their peers,
themselves, and their teacher. Consequences for misconduct include detention,
written assignments, parent notification, or office referral.
 Students are required to keep up with their assigned reading and turn in
assignments on time. Students will lose valuable learning experiences if they come
to class unprepared.

Grading: Students will be graded in a variety of ways including formal assessments such
as tests; participations grades for daily work; and authentic assessments using rubrics for
oral presentations, projects, and written assignments. The grading scale is as follows:
Lancaster ISD Secondary School Grading Policy is as following:
40%- Classwork
40%- Assessments
20%- Homework
* You can expect to receive no less than 2 grades per week.
