Expect success!!! 2nd Six Weeks – Fiction and Drama Unit: 6.6 -- Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Fiction. Students understand, make inferences and draw conclusions about the structure and elements of fiction and provide evidence from text to support their understanding. Understand, Make inferences, Draw conclusions ABOUT THE STRUCTURE AND ELEMENTS OF FICTION Including, but not limited to: Make inferences related to the whole story Make inferences related to a part of the story Make inferences related to structure of fiction (e.g., organization, paragraphs) Make inferences related to particular elements of fiction Character -actions, thoughts, and qualities/traits Point of view Setting Plot Summarize fictional text in ways that maintain meaning and logical order. Standards: TEKS: Vocabulary: Determine the meaning of grade-level academic English words derived from Latin, Greek, or other linguistic roots and affixes; use context (within a sentence and in larger sections of text) to determine or clarify the 1 meaning of unfamiliar or ambiguous words or words with novel meanings; use context (e.g., cause and effect or compare and contrast organizational text structures) to determine or clarify the meaning of unfamiliar or multiple meaning words; 2(B) use context (within a sentence and in larger sections of text) to determine or clarify the meaning of unfamiliar or ambiguous words; 2(B) use context (within a sentence and in larger sections of text) to determine or clarify the meaning of unfamiliar or ambiguous words or words with novel meanings;explain the meaning of foreign words and phrases commonly used in written English (e.g., RSVP, que sera sera); 2(D) identify the meaning of foreign words commonly used in written English with emphasis on Latin and Greek words (e.g., habeus corpus, e pluribus unum, bona fide, nemesis); use a dictionary, a glossary, or a thesaurus (printed or electronic) to determine the meanings, syllabication, pronunciations, alternate word choices, and parts of speech of words. explain how authors create meaning through stylistic elements and figurative language emphasizing the use of personification, hyperbole, and refrains. (1) Crosscurricular second language acquisition/learning strategiesm, Cross-curricular second language acquisition/listening, Cross-curricular second language acquisition/speaking, Cross-curricular second language acquisition/reading, Cross-curricular second language acquisition/writing Methods of Instruction: Students will be engaged in the learning process by: Group lectures and discussions Small group activities Individualized instruction Hands-on activities Course Expectations: Attendance is necessary to keep up with the class. If a student misses class time, they are missing the instruction time needed to learn a skill. However, if a student must miss class, they are required to make up missed work in a timely manner (1 day for each excused day missed, after which deductions will be made for late work). It is the student’s responsibility to retrieve their missed assignments from the instructor. Students are expected to be in their seat when the tardy bell rings. If not, they will be counted tardy. No eating, chewing, or drinking is allowed without Mrs. Walton's approval. No electronic devices are permitted without Mrs. Walton's approval. If I see it out for ANY reason, it will be confiscated. Students are required to participate in class and be respectful to their peers, themselves, and their teacher. Consequences for misconduct include detention, written assignments, parent notification, or office referral. Students are required to keep up with their assigned reading and turn in assignments on time. Students will lose valuable learning experiences if they come to class unprepared. 2 School or Classroom Rules: Be Prompt Be Prepared Be Productive Be Positive Be Polite 1. The grading scale is as follows: Lancaster ISD Secondary School Grading Policy is as following: 40%- Classwork 40%- Assessments 20%- Homework * You can expect to receive no less than 2 grades per week.
