ASSIGNMENT EXAMPLE May be typed or printed neatly TITLE: The Sneetches and Other Stories Author: Dr. Seuss “With their snoots in the air, they would sniff and they’d snort, we’ll have nothing to do with the Plain-Belly sort!” (Seuss 4). Importance to book The Star-Belly Sneetches feel superior to their Plain- Belly neighbors even though the only difference between these two groups is a small star on their bellies. However, this one characteristic is enough to make the Star-Belly Sneetches treat the Plain-Belly Sneetches with disdain. The Star-Belly Sneetches refuse to acknowledge the Plain-Belly Sneetches while walking down the street. In addition, Plain-Belly Sneetches are not invited to picnics or parties, and the children of the two groups are not permitted to play with one another. Relation to life This quote stood out because it reminds one of the cliques that form in school. Some individuals believe they are better than others because of unimportant characteristics like clothes, hairstyles, or accessories. One group or individual may taunt, tease, or bully another group or individual because of these superficial differences. Unkind words or gestures may be heard or seen in the hallways. Just like the Sneetches, certain individuals may stick their noses in the air around those who may be different. It is important for everyone to realize that people are generally the same and they should not let differences come between us. Recommendation The Sneetches and Other Stories by Dr. Seuss is a quick, fun read. Its powerful message about treating others the way you want to be treated is told with fun, made-up characters in a made-up place, yet uses real-life situations. Readers will come to see how hurtful words and actions can be when we treat those who are different from us in an unkind way. Through a valuable and expensive lesson, The Sneetches find a way to accept one another for who and what they are. With the rhythmical words of Dr. Seuss, everyone will find this story entertaining and heartwarming.
