See the King Exploring the riches of the book of Revelation Lecture #9 See the King over the beasts. Revelation 13:1-18 I. Introduction. The book of Revelation is not a puzzle to figure out but a book that is immensely practical. It was written for the first century church and for all who follow who are experiencing great difficulties and persecution. It was written to encourage them and us to stand fast for Jesus Christ. The book was written to help us see the unseen realities of the present and future to help us live for Christ now. Chapter 12 and 13 make it clear that our battle is not against “flesh and blood.” We need to be sure about who our enemy is. Very often Satan will encourage us to fight one another to keep us off of him. Chapter 13 helps us to further understand our enemy. II. The beast from the sea (Revelation 13:1-10) 1. We are told of the origins of the beast (13:1-2) The beast is in Satan’s likeness (13:1. See also 12:3). The beast is Satan’s representative (13:2). In Daniel 7 we read of four animals that are represented here. We learn that the four beasts represent the “kingdoms of the earth” (Dan. 7:17). This beast is all kingdoms who oppose God and his people. 2. We are told of the worship of the beast (13:3-10) Worship that is reserved for the Lamb is directed to the beast. (13:3-4) The true nature of the beast is one of ungodliness (13:5-7) There are those who refuse to worship the beast. Trust in the power of God and the love of Christ in the midst of Satanic opposition. 2. We need to draw close to Jesus Christ in the midst of Satanic opposition. 3. We must not fear taking a stand for Christ in midst of Satanic opposition. This means that we are people who speak the truth. This means that we are people who embody the truth. III. The beast from the earth (Revelation 13:11-18) We are told of his deceptive appearance. (Revelation 13:11) We learn of his diabolical plan. (Revelation 13:12) We learn of his dynamic appeal. (Revelation 13:13-15) We learn of his deadly approach. (Revelation 13:16-18) The number 666 could be gematria, that is, using numbers to spell words. It could mean that the beast is less than perfect. He is 666 not 777. This mark does tie in with the Revelation 7:3. This is not a literal mark. It speaks of character. The lessons to learn here: 1. We need to be ________________________________________________. 2. We need to practice ______________________________________________. 3. We need to beware of ___________________________________.
