SAT TC in Context
The Role of a TC (from AIAA Website)
AIAA Technical Committees (TCs) bring together experts in their fields
and given them the opportunity to exchange knowledge and get to
know their colleagues from around the globe. These committees
participate in numerous activities: they develop and administer over 20
technical conferences each year; conduct professional development
courses, produce books, and work with K-12 students to promote an
interest in engineering education. And that’s just the start. The TCs
also honor technical leadership through Technical and Best Paper
awards; serve as journal and book reviewers; formulate technology
assessment packages for the non-technical public, and even
develop and judge college student design contests.

 Lead: Som Dutta (soumyo.dutta@gatech.edu)
 Co-chair: Chi Mai
 Only 1 session
– Scheduled for Monday, Jan. 7th afternoon tentatively
– Filled with last minute submissions – we need to advertise

13
Space 2013 Update
• Part of the Space History, Society, and Policy track
 SAT TC lead: Som Dutta (soumyo.dutta@gatech.edu)
 SAT TC working with History and Legal TC’s also
• Space History, Society, and Policy Student Paper Competition
 Coordinator: Brad Steinfeldt (bsteinfeldt@gatech.edu)
 Encourage students to get engaged with the track and associated TCs
– SAT TC has taken leader role in organization of the competition
– Monetary prize ($750 supplied by ETM group)/certificate/luncheon recognition
 Requirements listed on TC website (https://info.aiaa.org/tac/ETMG/SATTC/default.aspx)
• Space 2013
 Text for the Call for Papers has been submitted
 Organizing meeting for the conference not occurring regularly yet
 Should every TC member be required to review abstracts? This is the norm in other
TC’s.
14
Potential Collaboration Areas: Space 2013
• Follow on to Sustaining the Vision: The Space Shuttles and Their Missions for the Next
Hundred Years
 Featured representatives from museums receiving a retired Space Shuttle and how they are
utilizing them
 SPACE 2013 to feature panelists of the “runner up” museums/institutes
 Brad has offered SATTC’s help to support this panel as needed
• Other collaboration opportunities?
 Usual suspects are LAAATC and HISTTC but perhaps a joint session with Space
Colonization?
15
SCI TECH 2014 Update
• AIAA Science and Technology Forum and Exposition
(SCI TECH) 2014 will be held at the Gaylord National
Harbor Hotel in Maryland, Jan. 13-16, 2014.

SCI TECH 2014 Update
Current CFP Draft
The Society and Aerospace Technology Technical Committee examines societal
benefits of aerospace technologies as well as the relationship between aerospace
and society, culture, and the arts. Abstracts are solicited that address these and
related issues. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
• Aerospace and terrorism
• Aerospace and public safety
• Astrosociology
• Benefits and examples of aerospace technology spin-offs
• Utilization of aerospace assets to address social problems
• Space medicine and medical astrosociology
• Group dynamics and societal institutions in isolated communities (space
settlements, Antarctica, etc.)
• Discussion of aerospace topics and programs from the perspective of disciplines
such as psychology, social psychology, sociology, and anthropology
17
SAT 2012 Highlights Article
• Every year, each TC is apportioned
about a page in the December issue of
Aerospace America to describe the
most important developments and
events that have occurred in its
technical area over the past year.
• Please read and send comments on the
draft by 6:00 PM Eastern tomorrow,
Sept. 13.
• Send comments to Som Dutta
(soumyo.dutta@gatech.edu), and CC
Brad Steinfeldt
(bsteinfeldt@gatech.edu) and Jarret
Lafleur (jarret.m.lafleur@gmail.com)
18
Delta Forum Status
• August 6 teleconference included representatives
from SATTC, HISTC, and SETC
• The ETM Group will stand down the Delta Forum
for 2013 and 2014.
 ETM Group lacks manpower to effectively support
the New Event Model (NEM), CASE, and Delta
Forum
 Possible overlap between the Delta Forum and the
larger New Horizons Forum held at ASM and
Aviation.
 TCs free to organize Delta Forums, but not at
expense of NEM or CASE
• Ideas for a regular SATTC panel session?
19
Project Updates
•
•
•
•
Aerospace Technology Award (Justice)
TC Guidebook (Christian)
