Verbs and Expressions
that use the infinitive

acabar followed by de + the infinitive to
indicate that something has just happened:
– Nosotros acabamos de escuchar esa canción
– We just listened to that song
Verbs and Expressions
that use the infinitive
• Here are some verbs
and expressions that
you have used that
are often followed by
an infinitive:
• Me gusta/gustaría—I
like/would like ..
• Me encanta—I love ..
• Poder—to be able
• Deber—ought to,
should
• Preferir—to prefer
• Querer—to want
• Pensar—to plan
• Necesitar—to need

Infinitivos y Reflexivos
• Reflexive verbs, when used in the infinitive, have
special rules
• If the verb before the reflexive verb is conjugated the
reflexive verb stays in the infinitive (just like all verbs
directly following a conjugated verb)
• However, even in the infinitive, the reflexive pronoun
must stay attached to the end of the verb and must
change to match the subject of the conjugated verb
– Ej: yo quiero lavarme la cara
(reflexive verb is not conjugated, but the pronoun does
match the subject of the conjugated verb “quiero”)
